  2. Independent or mainstream? • ‘Parallel Blood’ would be considered an independent film; the characters and the narrative are deep and drive the film rather than expensive special effects. • The main characters in ‘Parallel Blood’ are very ‘British’. This would probably limit the audience to be largely a UK one. American culture is more global than British culture so if Mark had been a NYPD detective rather than a policeman in England then maybe more people could relate to him. • However, we thought that having an atypical protagonist would make our film more interesting than having a stereotypical American cop as the central role. This would make the audience appreciate our film more and it would be better received.

  3. Distribution company • As our film is a smaller film, it will attract smaller distribution companies, like Lionsgateor Pathe. We have chosen to go with, however, Studiocanal. They distribute similar films to our own so I think it is most suited to our film than any other distribution company. • Studiocanal have a wide range of well respected films in their library. Most notably are ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ which made $49.3million in box office, ‘The Guard’ which made $17.6million and ‘Tyrannosaur’ which won three awards at the 2011 Sundance.

  4. marketing • Due to the size of our film, we will have to market in interesting and inexpensive ways to get attention. A good and cheap way to market it would be on the internet through viral marketing on social networks and through email. It could also be a good idea to create publicity stunts to grab attention. Stunts have proved to be successful for other independent films too: • ‘The Zombie Diaries’ organised a world record breaking zombie gathering when promoting their film • ‘Dead Man Running’ dropped hundreds of customised £5, £10 and £50 notes over crowds in London and Manchester with their logo on. Click here to view • ‘Up’ isn’t an independent film, but also used a stunt when promoting their film – they organised a fake house to float over the Thames powered by helium balloons to run along their narrative.

  5. screenings • Our film will probably be shown at film festivals in the UK and small picture house cinemas, like the Duke of York’s cinema in Brighton. • As ‘Parallel Blood’ is an independent and smaller film, it’s run in mainstream cinemas will be relatively short compared with blockbuster films. • We will get most our income through DVD sales, which will hopefully escalate through word of mouth and virally.
