  2. Purpose: • To make our BSc program more attractive for students • To achieve better learning outcomes

  3. General strategy: • To make learning more exciting • To implement student-oriented teaching methodology

  4. Suggested changes in teaching format: • To decrease lecture time to 1 academic hour • Tutorial after each lecture

  5. Suggested teaching methodology: • During lectures: short, sharp visual learning resources. PowerPoint presentations with the prevalence of graphic material (schemes, pictures, animations, etc) (students SHOULD HAVE handouts BEFORE lecture) • During tutorials: active learning methodology

  6. Active learning: general strategy • To encourage collaborative learning/working: to divide students into small subgroups, 4-6 student in each • During tutorial active tasks should be given to each subgroup • At the end of the tutorial: general discussion of given tasks • Main work – inside groups, teacher – “moderator”

Active learning: possible methodology, types of active tasks • To stimulate competitive process between students’ subgroups • Types of tasks: • Case-studies • MCQ quizzes • Crosswords (given by teacher or to make themselves) • Jeopardy, other types of games • Discussions around given topic • In-class writing • Projects (as out-class subgroup activity) • Role-play • Peer-teaching

Active learning: what do we need • To see examples of active learning-based classes • To develop general strategy: what types of active learning methods are preferable for first 2 years, for upper years? • To re-think the learning environment • To discuss how timing should be organized • To discuss how assessment should be organized • How discussion should be governed

  9. Active learning: our SPECIFIC problem • Difficult to use methodology, that requires from students independent web-search of information, because of students’ poor English knowledge…

We would appreciate having the opportunity to get acquainted with: • How students’ IT  and library services are organized at UWE (IT support, library catalogue, e-library), examples of active learning-based classes, computer-based sessions and used specific soft • The role of IT in teaching, learning process, monitoring IT services
