  1. Cell Structure & Function Cells and Heredity Chapter 1.2 (pgs 23-31)

  2. Inside the Cell • Humans are made up of several bodily systems (Respiratory, Nervous, Digestive) that utilize organs • Cells have similar structures, called organelles.

  3. Entering a Cell • Animal cells have only a Cell Membrane, which allows materials in & out of the cell.

  4. Entering a Cell • Cells are held together with a Cell Wall • Found only in plant cells • Rigid layer made of cellulose

  5. The Nucleus • The “brain” of the cell • Controls all aspects of the cell’s activity • Has a Nuclear Membrane • Protects the Nucleus just like the Cell Membrane.

  6. Into the Cytoplasm • The area inside the cell is called the Cytoplasm, which is constantly churning • Contains many organelles.

  7. The structure that allows materials In & Out of an animal cell is called…

  8. Oodles of Organelles

  9. The ER • The Endoplasmic Reticulum is the passageway that materials travel along • Ribosomeson the ER are protein factories, to build & repair cells • Golgi Bodies package and ship materials to other parts of the cell.

  10. This organelle is a storage space within a cell…

  11. This organelle is the passageway for materials within a cell…

  12. This organelle produces the energy the cell requires…

  13. What to Work On • Read Section 1.2, pages 24-31 • Answer Section Review questions (#1-4) on page 31
