  2. Conventions of this genre One of the conventions of a horror film is featuring specific common fears. These often include; Nightmares, alienation, vunrablity, death, fear of the unknown, and loss of identity. These will often be related to the main characters persona or background. 10 typical codes and conventions of horror films - Jump scares. - Low key lighting. - Flashbacks. - Quick, flashing shots. - Large, family houses. - Dark colour palettes. - Pathetic fallacy. - Young children.

  3. Typical narratives of this genre Horror story, a story in which the focus is on creating a feeling of fear. Such tales are of ancient origin and form a substantial part of the body of folk literature. They can feature supernatural elements such as ghosts, witches, or vampires, or they can address more realistic psychological fears.

  4. What sub-genres are there within this genre? Subgenres of horror: The main 4 branches of horror are: Killer, Monster/Creature, Paranormal and Psychological. There are also 2 sub-genres that could be considered main horror genres because of how popular they are. These are: Zombies and Gore/Splatter. This could possibly be classed as the most famous of horror styles. - Comedy horror - Folk horror - Found footage horror - Gothic horror - Natural horror - Slasher horror - Teen horror

  5. Does horror hybridise with other genres? • One of the many things that helps make the horror genre relevant to audiences is its ability to form links and hybrids to other genres. It is what a romantic comedy will do in order to touch the heartstrings of an audience or what a drama will do in order to make audiences cry into soaked tissues. Horror movie are predominantly the main genre which people are attracted to and are incredibly popular with all ages of audiences. ‘Film-makers might start with a set of horror paradigms to guarantee audiences interests, before throwing other tropes into the mix’. This gives us genre hybrids like: • Horror Romance (Twilight) • Horror War (R-Point, Dead Snow) • Horror Historical Drama (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) • Horror RomCom (Shaun of the Dead)

  6. How successful is this genre financially? Though many blockbusters these days are action movies or superhero movies, horror movies still get plenty of box-office love. And because so many horror movies can be made on shoestring budgets, the profit margin on a major hit can really make everyone involved scream with joy. The horror genre is a perennial favourite among filmmakers. The general perception is that they are fun to make, achievable on the lowest budgets and can earn a lot of money. The final item on that list normally relies on the assumption that the horror movie in question has a chance to be the next Paranormal Activity or Blair Witch Project, both of which were ludicrously successful and therefore almost certainly highly profitable. For every runaway success, there are a whole host of flops and failures which make no money and are barely watched by anyone.  Across all movies released in US cinemas between 1996 and 2016, horror movies appear to have the highest chance of making a profit, compared to movies within other genres.
