  2. Flag Meaning • The legend is that Duke Leopold V of Austria went out for a battle in the Crusades. He was wearing a white cloak and after the war, he was soaked in blood. He took off his belt and there was a strip of white on him.

  3. Flag History • The flag originated from Duke Friedrich II wanted Austria to become more independent from Rome so he adopted the red and white flag. The Empire was founded in 1808 and in 1938 it became a province of Germany. After the Second World War, Austria broke free of Germany and adopted the current form of the flag in 1984.
