Character Revelation • The men who lived in Lake town were showed to love the king under the mountain, for stories foretold that the return of the king (in this case, Thorin) would bring the people great happiness and wealth • The master of Lake town is shown to be apprehensive to the party over their accountability, whether the party was who they say they are • The king of the wood elves was revealed that he was a person greedy for the treasure. He had told his to make watch in Mirkwood, the lakeshore and north into the mountains • Bilbo began to worry about the final quest to the Lonely Mountains and his battle with Smaug, the dragon

  4. Literary Devices • 1) Personification…“The way the mountain seemed to frown at him and threaten him as it drew ever nearer.”(Tolkien, 190-191) This is an example of personification because the author had given a inanimate/ non- human subject a human quality (frown).

Literary Devices (Cont.…) • 2) Foreshadowing… “which shows he was a wise elf and wiser than the men of the town, though not quite right, as we shall see in the end.” (Tolkien, 199) This is an example of foreshadowing because the author is giving a clue about what will happen later on in the story ( as we shall see in the end).

  6. Literary Devices (Cont.…) • 3) Personification… “The lakes shall shine and burn”. This is an example of personification because the lake are given qualities that it does not have. E.g. Lakes do not really shine and burn.

  7. Chapter Questions • 1) Lake town was built mostly of wood on the lake. Where could the wood have come from? • 2) Why were the people of Lake town so open to accept Bilbo and company to their town? • 3) Do you believe the people of Lake town fear Smaug, the dragon? Use reasons in the text to support your belief?
