  11. Background Information This story is set in a rural area of northern Tanzania in East Africa in the early 1060s. The coins that Saruni collects are ten-cent coins; ten of these ten-cent coins equals a shilling, which is a silver coin. Eight shillings equals about a dollar. In the 1960s. A bicycle cost anywhere from 150 to 500 shillings. This was too expensive for many Tanzanians, who did not make enough money to buy a bicycle only for recreation or for their children to play with. A family who owned a bicycle most likely used it for transportation and for work. The non-English words used are Swahili or Maasai. Swahili is a language that is a mixture of native Bantu and Arabic tongues. Maasai is the name of an ethnic group—one of many—whose members live in East Africa.
