  2. Expedition • Long voyage to find riches and gold and claim land for a monarch

  3. Coronado • Was looking for the mythical Seven Golden Cities of Cibola

  4. Age of Contact • Period in history when the Spanish came to Texas and made contact with the Native Americans

  5. Cabeza de Vaca • Began his expedition with Navarez • Was on one of the rafts that landed at Galveston Island • Spent time as a slave to the Native Americans in the Coastal Region • Escaped and made his way to Mexico City • His journal became of valuable source for us to learn about Texas during the Age of Contact Era

  6. Colony • Land or territory claimed for a king/queen and settled with people who are under the authority of the Crown

  7. Pineda • In 1519 he mapped the coastline of Texas which proved invaluable to other explorers

  8. Conquistadors • Sent by monarchs to claim new land and riches for Spain

  9. La Salle • French explorer who shipwrecked at Matagorda Bay when he sailed past the mouth of the Mississippi • Established Fort St Louis in the 1680s • Was killed by his own man

  10. Viceroy • Served as the king’s representative in Spanish Colonies

  11. Presidios • Forts built to house soldiers who were responsible for protecting the Spanish missions in Texas

  12. Gold, God, Gold & Glory • Reason the king sent explorers to the New World • Reason priests started coming on expeditions • What the explorers hoped to find so they could achieve their ultimate goal of….

  13. Pueblos • Style of home to the Southwestern (US) Tribes • When the light hit off these homes they looked like entire cities made of gold

  14. Suppress • Using military force to establish control over a group of people and get them to change their lifestyles to one more similar to the conquering people

  15. Mission • Early form of churches and buildings that the Spanish used to try and convert the Native Americans to the Catholic faith

  16. Expansion • The growth of nations into new areas or territories either close by or oceans away

  17. Commissioned • Given authority to carry out a specific task or duty

  18. Friar • Individual brother in a specific order of the Roman Catholic faith

  19. Buccaneers • Pirates who preyed on merchant ships during the 1600s
