  3. BACKGROUND • Discovered in 1975 by Allen Stere • Named after the town of Lyme, Connecticut • Most common tick born disease in North America • Most common in the states of New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin…just to name a few • Ranked second in public health problems in the United States

  4. Ways to contract Lyme Disease • From the Bacteria BorreliaBurgdorferi • Contract through ticks (most commonly hard bodied) • Deer ticks • Blacklegged ticks • Ticks can get the disease from… • Deer • Raccoons • Skunks • White mice

  5. Contracting the disease continued • The tick must bite the human and stay attached • It must stay attached for a minimum of 24 hours for successful transfer

  6. Symptoms • Migraines • Arthritis • Neurological problems • Bulls eye rash • Heart problems

  7. STAGES: • STAGE ONE: Flu like symptoms, bulls eye rash • STAGE TWO: muscle pain, muscle paralysis, heart arrhythmia, joint inflammation • STAGE THREE: problems with speech, numbness, tingling, spontaneous muscle spasm

  8. Diagnosis: • Difficult to diagnosis because of common symptoms • Blood tests • ELISA • Western blot test • If severe enough a spinal tap may be preformed • Questioning about tick exposure

  9. Treatment: • Regular appointments with physician • Antibiotics • Penicillin • Erythromycin • Tetracycline • Ibuprofen to help with inflammation • Vaccine 1999: LYMErix • Discontinued in 2002

Prevention: • Self examinations • Insect repellant • Avoid wooded areas • When in a wooded area walk on center of pathway or in the least wooded area • Shower to rinse off any ticks you may not have removed • Proper removal includes: • Using a tweezers grasp the spot closest to the head • Tug firmly on tick until you remove it from the skin
