A bacterial infection that spreads throughout the body, but not deadly A protozoan disease caused by ticks Caused by a black-legged tick’s bite This has been around for just 38 years Victims can find out if they have it by looking for a rash, the chills, a fever, light-headedness, muscle pain, body-wide itching Leads to speech problems and skipped heartbeats if not treated with antibiotics Not contagious for humans, but very fast-paced What is Lyme Disease?

Appeared in the early 1970’s in Lyme, Connecticut Children first developed rashes and later rheumatoid arthritis Scientists found that the first symptoms start usually in the summer, the peak of tick season In 1981, scientists finally discovered the connection between ticks and Lyme Disease November 1981, two scientists found that a spirochete caused Lyme disease. The spirochete was named Borrelia burgdorferi in honor of Dr. Burgdorfer. History of Lyme Disease

  4. Black-legged ticks carry a spirochete named Borrelia burgdorferi. They bite animals and humans, their “hosts” Once it enters, it spreads throughout the body. Only antibiotics can stop the harmful effects of Lyme Disease. How DO you get Lyme Disease?

If diagnosed soon after tick attack, antibiotics will be best from 72 hours • After the bite on a 2-4 week course if: • Victim is at least 8 years old • Not pregnant/feeding • Tick was attached for 36 hours (up to doctor) • Tick is identified as a Lyme-disease carrier • Antibiotic use depends on disease stage/symptoms.   7. Lyme Disease can be vaccinated to prevent it from dogs, but not people. Animal models of disease are used to update the Lyme disease stages. Borrelial bacteria is the bacteria that is in Lyme disease that is found in most black-legged ticks. Severity of symptoms and length of time from bite to professional help determines how long you must use the antibiotics. Labs are creating prevention plans to limit/warn humans of unsafe, excess contact in the woods. CURRENT RESEARCH
