  6. READING IS THINKING • Students need to be aware of their thinking and aware of what is a just right book • Students need to do strategic thinking and use comprehension strategies • Students need to be engaged in their thinking, notice when they are not engaged, and make necessary adjustments

Eight Strategies of Proficient Readers • I make connections to what I already know. • I ask myself questions. • I make inferences by “reading between the lines.” • I create pictures in my mind. • I check my comprehension while I read. • I use a variety of fix-up strategies when I don’t understand. • I determine what is important in what I read. • I understand what I read and I synthesize information.

  8. How Can YOU Can Help • Be a part of your child’s reading life. Please ask questions about what they are reading. Once a child starts explaining, ask follow-up questions and help promote conversation. This talking will allow for the student to check their understanding. Also, notice what they are reading and check their reading log. • Students should be reading about ¾ of a page in 1 minute independently if they are reading a “just right” book.
