  3. 3 John cont’d (for next week!) • Verses 5 & 6 • Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren andfor strangers, who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well,

  4. The Life of Prayer Grade 4 & 5 girls’ Sunday-school class St. Mary COC, Ottawa, ON

  5. What do you know about prayer?

  6. Lets look at 2 different people in the Bible…. • Open your Bibles to Matthew 15: 21-28

  7. Matthew 15: 21-28 “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.” “Lord, help me!” “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

  8. Lets look at another example in the Bible…. • Open your Bibles to Luke 18:35-42

  9. “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” “What do you want Me to do for you?” “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Luke 18:35-42 “Lord, that I may receive my sight.” “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And immediately he received his sight, and followed Him, glorifying God.

  10. What’s the first thing they each said? “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

  11. What’s the first thing they each said? “O Lord, Son of David” or “Jesus, Son of David” They both used Jesus’ name! This shows they have a HUMBLE heart because they recognize they are sinners “Have mercy on me”

  12. Can you remember something Jesus said about praying with His name? • John 14:13-14 • “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” • Mark 16:17 • “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons;…” • …And in Romans 10:13, the Apostle Paul reminds us: • “For ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lordshall be SAVED.’”

  13. One more example… (Acts 3:3-10) “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” …When the people wondered how he was healed, Peter answered: “…His name, through FAITH in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know….” (Acts 3:16)

  14. What 3 things do we learn from these examples? • We have to have FAITH in Jesus’ name; • Jesus’ name is VERY precious & POWERFUL! • Because he loves us, Jesus gave us the precious gift of being able to pray with His powerful name! • Through His name, God hears our prayers! • We have to pray using His name with a HUMBLE heart by recognizing that we are sinners “Have mercy on me, a sinner!”

  15. “The Jesus prayer” • Also called - “Arrow prayers” "Lord Jesus Christ Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner” (Repeat..)

  16. So, how often should we really pray??? • *Our whole lives* should be like a prayer to God • Prayer is speaking with God and being in His presence • The Bible says: • “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5: 17) [MEMORY VERSE] • Pray with “UNDERSTANDING” (1 Corinthians 14:15)

  17. …“Well I talk to God but I can't hear Him!!” • Lets play a GAME called: • “Answers without speaking”!

  18. So, when can we pray the “Jesus Prayer”?

  19. This week, lets practice praying the “Jesus prayer” • You can personalize it… "Lord Jesus Christ Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner. Lord Jesus Christ _________” (fill in the blank with what you want to ask Him...) • Think about how muchJESUS loves YOUand how much you love Jesus… • Ask Him to guide you and help you before everything you do!

  20. Short story on the power of the Jesus Prayer: The monk who couldn’t memorize Psalms • A very simple monk lived in one of the monasteries in Egypt. He was not educated, couldn't read or write, and he couldn't even memorize a psalm. • There was a rule at that monastery, that each monk must memorize Psalm 150 . This simple monk could only pray the Jesus prayer, but he prayed it with all his love, from the bottom of his heart. • At that time the monastery consists of many small cells & each monk would have his own cell. The Abbott of the monastery knew that this monk was not following the monastery's rule and was not memorizing psalms, so the Abbott asked him to leave the monastery.  • The simple monk answered: “I will obey you my Father, but please allow me to take my cell with me out of the monastery”. The Abbott laughed at him and his simple mind, and told him that he could take it with him. • The simple monk, brought a rope, wrapped it around the cell, and talked to it saying : "Yallayamobaraka"= “Let's go, you blessed one", and much to the surprise of everybody the cell started moving behind the monk.
