HIFI Mixers HIFI Consortium Meeting 15 April 2003 Wolfgang Wild HIFI Signal Chain Manager SRON Groningen
HIFI Signal Chain (Mixers + IF) • Presentations concerning mixers and IF amplifiers • IF-1 high (4-8 GHz) - Juan Daniel Gallego • IF-2 - Alex Megej • Bands 1 to 4 - Wolfgang Wild • Band 5 - John Pearson • Band 6 - Wolfgang Wild / John Pearson • IF-1 low (2.4-4.8 GHz) - Nick Whyborn
Main points since Oct 2002 • Mixer CDRs were held • Bands 1 to 4: 21/22 Oct 2002 (OK + 7 RIDs) • Band 5: 13 Sep 2002 (OK + RIDs) • Band 6 17 Jan 2003 (OK + 12 RIDs) • QM (FM) fabrication started for bands 1 to 4 (5) • Band 6 collaboration between Chalmers and JPL underway • DMs: bands 1 to 6 delivered • MSA-1 at Chalmers for beam measurements • IF-1 low prototyping (−> Nick) • Updated QM / FM schedule • CPPA parts delivery late: action taken to avoid further delays • Signal Chain Manager full-time on HIFI since 1 Jan 2003
Performance Bands 1 to 5 Input Noise for Mixer + 10 K IF
Band 1 (LERMA) • Current status • QM parts procurements almost complete; mixer mounting end of April • IRAM delivered ~150 junctions • February/March : extensive FTS testing of IRAM junctions • Noise measurements underway on DM mixer • LERMA FTS operational, LO sources problem • Technical problems : • DM mixer at end of lifetime / slows down measurements
Band 1 Performance T_rec uncorrected for optics and IF contribution T_IF=85 K (shot noise), limited LO coverage
Band 2 (KOSMA) • QM now in assembly phase • IF bandwidth improvement • Noise temp confirmed • QM horns received • FM horns problematic (quality + schedule) • Issues: QA + schedule
Band 2 Performance Noise temp confirmed with several measurements
QM Band 2 IF Output Bandshift – 200MHz
Band 3 and 4 (SRON) • Status: • Parts for QM arrived, one unit assembled (three more to go) • Intended improvements in QM (EMC, IF): • EMC shielding: OK • IF circuit: resonance within IF band (problem) • Further functional tests OK (magnet, heater) • Performance: • Band 3: receiver ~ 300 K, after correction optics ~ 200 K • Band 4: receiver ~ 400 K @ 1 THz, 300 K after correction • Concerns: • Schedule • CPPA parts • Delivery of flight horns • Resource availability
Band 3 and 4 performance Typical Band 3 results DIMES ground plane, DIMES device Measurement at 4.2 and 2 K. With, without correction for optics losses Recent Band 4 results JPL ground plane, DIMES device Measurement with thick (blue) and thin beam splitter (red) Very promising ! More measurements needed, LO repair needed
Band 6L and 6H (Chalmers / JPL) • DM deliveries from Chalmers to SRON in Sep 02 and Mar 03 • - Interfaces checked, but devices damaged both times • Possible reasons are being investigated • CTH / JPL collaboration underway + challenging • Mixer team is finalizing the fabrication documents package • Optics: under fabrication • Mechanical drawings + circuit boards art works being finalized • EMC test in Feb 03: improvement needed • Chalmers decided to use smaller chips −> more devices / wafer • HEB lifetime test started, first results
HEB mixer performance in DM MU LO: 1.627 THz, TIF= 2-4 K Chalmers The lens was w/o AR coating (30% reflection at Silicon-vacuum interface) The ratio of the mixer-to-LNA noise was about 10dB TNOISE = 1300 − 2100 K
HEB lifetime test • What is HEB sensitivity to atmosphere ? • Chalmers started controlled lifetime test on 3 March • 2 devices in desiccator, 2 devices in lab atmosphere • All devices in ESD safe boxes • Measurements after 1, 16, and 39 days for both • samplesshowed no change in R300 and Ic
QM and FM deliveries • Current best estimates by mixer groups • Assumes CPPA meets user need dates • Assumes no qualification problems
Major worries • QM and FM delivery schedule • CPPA delivery dates for FM parts • FM horn delivery (quality and/or schedule) • If further delays: Funding (Band 2 and 6, IF-2) may • become an issue • Band 6 • Design maturity (EMC compliance, bias and IF boards) • ESD safety • Schedule • Test equipment (LO, beam measurement) • “Surprises” during qualification program • Resources
Summary • CDR for bands 1−6 held • QM (FM) fabrication for bands 1 to 4 (5) underway • Collaborative band 6 effort • Updated QM / FM delivery schedule • First results of HEB lifetime testing
