Positions Fouls Violations Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting Rules of the Game • Typically played in two halves, each lasting 12-16 minutes • When a player is holding the ball he/she is allowed to move one foot to pivot • Players in possession of the ball must dribble it in order to travel • Defenders are now allowed to make contact with the offensive players • Each player is allowed 5 fouls per game • A team is allowed 7 fouls per half, for each foul committed afterwards then the opposing team shoots a 1 and 1 from the foul line (if the player makes the first shot he/she can take a second) • The ball changes possession after each violation • Players who are fouled during a shot are given two foul shots • If a player is fouled while shooting and makes the basket, they are given the points and are given an additional foul shot

Positions Fouls Violations Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting Player Positions • Point Guard: Responsible for bringing the ball up the court and starting offensive plays • Shooting Guard: Helps bring the ball up the court and is often a three-point shooter • Small Forward: Plays on the wing and in the post position and is an important rebounder • Power Forward: Plays in the down in the post position, responsible for getting a lot of the teams rebounds • Center: Participates in the jump ball at the beginning of the game and plays down in the post position, typically the tallest member of the team and has to fight for the most rebounds

Positions Fouls Violations Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting Fouls • Foul: Any illegal contact made between a player and his/her opponent • Hand Check: Defender has his/her hands on opponent when the offensive player is ahead of the defender • Holding: Grabbing onto the arm or hand of an offensive player • Blocking: Defender blocks offenders progress with his/her body without establishing his/her position first • Offensive Foul: Offensive player runs into defender who has established his/her position • Moving Screen: Player does not establish position before setting a pick for his/her teammate

Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting Violations • Violation: Minor offenses against the rules that are penalized by giving possession of the ball to the other team • Traveling: Player with possession of the ball either takes too many steps or moves/switches his/her pivot foot • Double Dribbling: Player with the ball stops dribbling then begins to dribble for a second time • Three Seconds: Player spends more than 3 with at least one foot in the paint (Square created by the hoop, foul line, and the sides where players stand during a foul shot) Positions Fouls Violations

Mikan Drill 5 Spot Shooting Drill Zig Zags Scramble Beat the Pro 3 Player Weave Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting The Mikan Drill • For: Improving lay-up performance • Using one basketball, perform a lay-up from the right side then from the left. Continue repeating for 30 seconds to a minute. • Try to keep the ball up high, making your arm strong and allowing you to execute the lay-up more quickly

Mikan Drill 5 Spot Shooting Drill Zig Zags Scramble Beat the Pro 3 Player Weave Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting 5 Spot Shooting Drill • For: Improving shooting accuracy • Select 5 Spots on the court to shoot from, start in close to the hoop (in the 3-5 foot range) • Shoot from each spot until you make 2 shots in a row from that spot then rotate to the next spot • To increase the challenge, either move the spots back, or increase the number of shots you have to make to move on

Mikan Drill 5 Spot Shooting Drill Zig Zags Scramble Beat the Pro 3 Player Weave Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting Zig Zags • For: Improving dribbling skills and defending on the ball • With a partner, practice dribbling up the court. • One person plays defense and is working to force the dribbler to change directions • The dribbler is following a zig zag pathway, making the defender work harder to beat him/her to the spot

Mikan Drill 5 Spot Shooting Drill ZigZags Scramble Beat the Pro 3 Player Weave Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting Three-Player Weave • For: Improving lead passes and fitness level • Three players start on the baseline, one person by each side line and one under the hoop • The player under the hoop passes to one side then follows the pass to cut behind their teammate • The teammate receiving the ball passes to the third teammate then cuts behind him/her • This pattern is repeated all the up the court • When a player receives the ball around the elbow of the foul line, he/she dribbles in for a lay-up

Scramble Mikan Drill 5 Spot Shooting Drill Zig Zags Scramble Beat the Pro 3 Player Weave Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting • For: Improving offensive and defensive strategies • With a partner, place a ball on the court and take a few steps away from it • Decide who will be the offensive player and the defensive player • When the start signal is given (a whistle, counting to 3, etc) the defender tries to keep the offensive player from getting the ball by boxing him/her out • No fouling is allowed during this drill

Beat the Pro Mikan Drill 5 Spot Shooting Drill Zig Zags Scramble Beat the Pro 3 Player Weave Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting • For: Improving shooting accuracy and endurance • Shooter starts by taking a foul shot then cuts to the elbow of the foul line waiting for the pass • Their partner gets the rebound and passes the ball back to the shooter • The shooter takes a jump shot and cuts to the opposite elbow, this is repeated until he/she gets either beats the pro or loses to the pro • The shooter gets one point for every made shot, but loses a point for every shot missed, he/she starts off with 0 points

Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting Advice from Coach • Go into a lay-up strong, using your body to protect the ball from the defender • Take shots closer to the hoop to increase your field goal percentage • On defense, beat the defender to the spot and establish position to create an offensive foul • If your shots aren’t going in move in closer but keep shooing and they’ll start to go in for you. • Always be confident in your ability to play • Practice Practice Practice

Defense Lines on the court scoring Dribbling Lay Ups Offensive Strategy Advice from Coach Passing Drills Rules of the game Shooting Passing • Lead Pass: Passes that are thrown to where the receiver will be • Bounce Pass: Passes that bounce on between the passer and receiver • Should come up to about the waist of the receiving player • Used to get around the defense when attacking the hoop • Chest Pass: Passes that travel in a flat line to the receiver • Used to make quick, hard passes • Overhead/skip Pass: Passes that travel in a high arc over/past one teammate and to another • Used to make long passes
