  2. CLASSIFYINGSENTENCES The Simple Sentence The simple sentence consists 0f a single independent clause.

  3. CLASSIFYINGSENTENCES The Simple Sentence Simple sentences contain just one subject and one verb. Ex. The hail fell.

  4. CLASSIFYINGSENTENCES The Simple Sentence Simple sentence with compound subject. Ex. Hail and rain are common.

  5. CLASSIFYINGSENTENCES The Simple Sentence Simple sentence with compound verb. Ex. The floor squeaked and groaned.

  6. CLASSIFYINGSENTENCES The Simple Sentence Simple sentence with compound direct object. Ex. She opened the gift box and the letter.

  7. CLASSIFYINGSENTENCES The Compound Sentence A compound sentence consists of two or more main independent clauses. *Most compound sentences have two independent clauses joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction.

  10. CLASSIFYINGSENTENCES The Complex Sentence The main clause can stand alone as a simple sentence. The subordinate clause cannot stand alone as a sentence.
