Tradition of HE • University of Tartu (1632) – a common centre for HE and science in the Baltic region • Academia Petrina (1775) in Jelgava • Riga Polytechnic Institute (1862) – first higher education institution (HEI) in the territory of Latvia • University of Latvia (1919)in Riga – first university in independent Latvia • 57 HEI in Latvia, 2010 Humanism, openness, Respect for traditions

Latvia – Member of the European Higher Education Area (I) Achievements: • Three – cycle degree system (bachelor, master and doctoral studies) • Diploma supplement, since 2004 • Credit points system is compatible with ECTS • External quality assurance system according to the EU Standards and Guidelines

Latvia – Member of the European Higher Education Area (II) Achievements: • Implementation of the principles of the Lisbon Recognition Convention • Students` involvement in HE processes, int.al. policy development • Autonomy of HEI in respect to modernization agenda of the universities • Lifelong learning

In Europe today there are about 10 million less job places than previously was expected Women will be better educated than men 2020 Most of the new jobs in the future will require high qualification Age group 55+ will have higher qualification than the same age group had in 2010 Demand for employers with high skills will increase from 29% to 35%, with low skills - drop from 20% to 15% Knowledge necessary not only to get a job, but to create new jobs in future Source: CEDEFOP

International Co-operation (I) • Bilateral co-operation agreements between ministries (agreement in the Field of Education between the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, October 4, 2006) • Bilateral agreements between HEI (in 2009 the amount of agreements with foreign universities doubled) • Mobility of students and academic staff

International Co-operation (II) • Joint study programs with foreign universities • Research visits, mobility of the academic staff • More than 70 study programs for foreign students • Organization of joint conferences, seminars, study visits • Co-operation in the framework of the programs of the EU (FP7,Erasmus Mundus etc), the Council of Europe, UNESCO, ASEM and other • Providing expertise in implementing Bologna reforms, quality assurance systems etc.
