  1. Parent Curriculum Night2014-2015

  2. What does it mean to be a Title I School? • Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding (Title I dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. These dollars are used for… • Identifying students experiencing academic difficulties and providing timely assistance to help these student’s meet the State’s challenging content standards • Purchasing supplemental staff/programs/materials/supplies • Conducting parental Involvement meetings/trainings/activities • Recruiting/Hiring/Retaining Highly Qualified Teachers • Being a Title I school also means • parental involvement and parents’ rights.

  3. Parent Information • See our website for class information. • Report cards go home every 6 weeks. • Progress reports go home every 3 weeks. • Fall parent conferences are being scheduled. Please sign up with your child’s teacher. (20 minute time slots)

  4. Third Grade Classroom Expectations: • 1. Be respectful. • -Raise your hand to speak. • -Keep rude comments, hands, feet, and • other objects to yourself. • 2. Be responsible. • -Follow all directions quickly and quietly the • first time they are given. • 3. Be ready to learn. • -Keep your work area clean with necessary • materials ready.

  5. Consequences: • 1st offense= verbal warning • 2nd offense= Teacher signs behavior calendar in CUB and student misses 5 minutes of recess. • 3rd offense= Teacher signs behavior calendar in CUB and student misses the first 10 minutes of recess. • 4th offense= Teacher signs behavior calendar in CUB, student sits out for all recess, and completes a discipline form that goes home to be signed. Parents are called. • 5th or SEVERE offense = Discipline referral to office.

  6. Rewards & Privileges • Earn kick-it-up tickets for following 4-Star Expectations. • Tickets are put into a hopper each week and drawn out during assembly on Friday. Several prizes are given out. • As a class, students can earn letters spelling “CAFETERIA” to receive free choice seating on Fridays during lunch. • Fun Friday is earned for completing work and following classroom expectations.

  8. Morning Meetings Building a classroom culture of honesty, tolerance, and trust.

  9. School Work….. • Graded work: Comes home in the Wednesday folder. Please be sure to sign, empty, and return on Thursday. • We use eschoolPLUS Grade book, which you can access online to view your child's grades. • Note that scores below 70 are given the opportunity to be corrected after re-teaching. The 2 grades will then be averaged.

  10. Homework Math • Homework will be sent home weekly. Return on Friday. Language Arts • Your child is expected to read daily for a minimum of 20 minutes. Please make sure your child is recording his/her reading in their “At-Home Reading Log” and recording minutes read on the homework sheet. Parent please sign and return on Friday. • Suggestion: After your child has read, have him/her retell the story or the chapter. The following questions may help you and your child in the retelling of the story.   • What happened at the beginning?  In the middle?  At the end? • Who are the main characters? How did they change during the story? • What events (in sequence) happened in your story? • What is the setting of the story? Where and when did the story take place? • What is the problem in the story? What is the solution?

Reading promotes comprehension, vocabulary, conventional spelling, a sense of grammar, writing competency, and a positive attitude toward the written word.~Routman 2000, 44Reading at home is the most important thing you can do to help your child be successful in school.Children who read at least 20 minutes per day encounter more than 1,000,000 words per year! Reading at Home

  12. 2014-15 Math Year At A Glance • Problem Solving/Reasoning • Graphs and charts • Number Patterns : skip counting, fact families…. • Place Value • Money • Addition/Subtraction/Multiplication/Division • Measurement • Geometry • Time • Fractions

  13. Language Arts at a Glance • We use reader’s/writer’s workshop model daily. • Spelling lists are sent home a six weeks at a time and tests are on Fridays. All spelling tests will be averaged into one grade per six weeks.

  14. Science • We will cover a variety of units based on matter, light and optics, ecosystems, earth and space, soils, weathering and erosion, and other science inquiry projects. • Lessons are based on hands-on and inquiry based learning.

  15. Social Studies • Social Studies is integrated into Language Arts. Our objectives focus on communities and citizenship. • Famous people from history will be researched and presented at our Living Museum in the spring.

  16. Field Trip Traditions Kindergarten apple orchard, walking tour of Justin, Ft. Worth Zoo First Grade Casa Manana Children’s Theatre & Elm Fork Nature Center Second Grade Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History & Will Rogers TheatreThird Grade Elm Fork Nature Center & The Nutcracker at Bass Hall Fourth Grade Texas play in Ft. Worth National Cowgirl Museum & OLC Fifth Grade OLC (3 times) Best Christmas Pageant Ever (play) Ross Perot Museum (extended day)Most venues only allow 1 or 2 parents. We will draw names if there are multiple parents wanting to attend. The cost for admission & bus range from $7-10.

  17. Communication!!! • Call, email, or send a note in the CUB if you have questions. • Review student work brought home in Wednesday folder. • Sign and return empty folder on Thursday.

  18. Healthy Snacks – We are eating and working at the same time. Please make sure the snack is not messy and it is healthy. • If possible, place snack in separate bag in backpack- not in the lunch box. Some students are eating part of lunch as a snack.

  19. Arrival At School: • Students are allowed in the building at 7:15 a.m. • Instruction begins promptly at 7:45. Please make sure your child arrives on time so he/she is ready to learn.
