  5. What do these mean? • Patriot • Freedom • Terrorist

  6. Vocabulary • Patriot • Person who vigorously supports their country and is prepared to defend it against enemies or detractors

  7. Freedom • The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint

  8. Terrorist • A Person who uses terrorism in the pursuit of political aims. • Terrorism • Systematic use of violence (terror) as a means of coercion for political purposes. • Domestic Terrorism • Terrorist attacks carried out by people born in that country

  9. September 11, 2001 • 4 Planes were Hi-jacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists • 2977 victims, more than 6000 injured

  25. The Patriot Act • Enacted in 2001 as a response to September 11th attacks. • Enabled the government to limit certain civil liberties, basic rights and freedoms, to ensure American safety against terrorists.

ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) • “The ACLU is our nation’s guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.” – ACLU website.

  27. Debate: ACLU vs. the Government • The Government and the ACLU are debating the provisions of the Patriot Act. • Half of you will be part of the Government. • You are defending these provisions and stating they are necessary to keep the US safe. • Half of you will be part of the ACLU. • You will be stating that these are unnecessary provisions that are invading on constitutional rights for no good.

Debate • In order to make sure our debate goes smoothly we are going to do the following things: • 1 when you are one of the 3 people in the center, you need to use the sentence starters. • Each group in the center will be there for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes we will rotate. • Each person will start off at a 55. Every time you talk and engage in the discussion/use information from the handouts in your points you will get 15 points. That means to get a 100 you will need to talk 3 times. • Moderator will be responsible for calling on one person at a time, keeping order, and asking leading questions. • I will act as assistant moderator.

  29. Homework • Take home the Patriot Act Debate paper and prepare 5 talking points, using the 10 points from the patriot act and the amendments. • You will want to write 4 points you can use in discussion and 1 point that you think the other side will make.

  30. Snowden Article • 1) Who is Edward Snowden? • 2) Why is the United States mad at him and want to charge him? • 3) Why is he in Russia? • 4) How does this Relate to the Patriot Act?
