Choosing Typefaces • Choose typefaces purposefully, and don’t overdo it • Know the difference between display/ text type and serif /sans serif fonts • Don’t mix similar font families in the same layout, especially serif fonts
Types of Type • Serif • The small extensions on the ends of letters • Serif fonts are good for body text because the serifs tend to make the text “flow” • Sans Serif • French for “without serif” • Sans serif fonts are good for headlines and titles (examples of display text)
Type: Legibility • Use an appropriate leading (120%) • Avoid using too many typefaces • Avoid all-capitals in body text • Use italics instead of underlining
Type: Legibility, cont’d. • Use comfortable kerning (tracking) • Be careful of line length and column width; with wider columns, increase leading
Typography Terms • X-height: the height of the lower case x in a font • Point size: the vertical measurement of a font (approximately 72 points per inch) • Cap height: height of the capital letters • Baseline: the imaginary line on which letters rest
Terms, cont’d. • Ascenders: parts of letters that rise above the baseline • Descenders: parts of letters that hang below the baseline • Counters: spaces surrounded by a letter
