  4. Texting and Literacy • Text messaging is positively correlated with higher scores on verbal reasoning tests, spelling and writing attainment, reading speed and accuracy.

  9. Fan Fiction and Storytelling • Teenage girls writing for fan fiction sites, created intricate narratives that weave together both print based text and digital media to convey compelling narratives of their everyday lives.

Myth: Video Games Increases Isolation and withdraw from community • 76% of Teens play games with their friends in both on and offline environments. • -Digital Media environments are hyper social. • 52% Play games where they think about moral and ethical issues. • 43% Play games where they help make decisions about how a community, city or nation should run.

  12. Gamming & Civic Engagement • The majority of game players exhibit and increase in civic engagement: • Go online to get information about current events. • Attempt to persuade others how to vote. • Raise money for charity. • Young voter turnout in 2008 increased 103% over 2004.

  13. Kids Read • More pressure on kids to learn to read as • communication among peers becomes more text based.

  14. Kids Write • Digital technologies have sparked a resurgence of text driven communication and is inspiring a new appreciation for writing among teens!

  16. Adventures of Tom and Jerry Ice Cream Stealer • One day in Louisville, it was so hot that Jerry almost melted. He went to the refrigerator in Betty’s kitchen and got one of Tom’s favorite milk bars. When Tom saw Jerry eating the bar he attacked Jerry. • Jerry started running all over Betty’s house. Jerry was throwing plates, cups, cheese, and anything he could find. Jerry even took a hammer and whacked Tom right on the head. • As soon as Jerry reached the back door he set a mousetrap and went outside to find Sparky the dog. When Tom reached the door he stepped in the trap and hurt his toe and hand. When he got it off his hand he went outside to find Sparky right behind himTom stared running and all of a sudden Sparky jumped on Tom and gave him a black eye. • All the while Jerry was eating fresh cheese from a picnic basket. After Jerry was done he ran back into the house with Tom right behind him. Before Tom could even grab Jerry’s tail, Jerry ran right into his mouse hole and got away, again

Kids will Learn how do this on their Own!!! • Three concerns, suggest the need for policy and pedagogical interventions: • The Participation Gap — the unequal access to the opportunities, experiences, skills, and knowledge that will prepare youth for full participation in the world of tomorrow. • The Transparency Problem — The challenges young people face in learning to see • clearly the ways that media shape perceptions of the world. • Engagement and Relevancy - The primary reason nearly half of the young adults gave for dropping out was that classes were uninteresting, school was boring and school was irrelevant.

What do 21st Classroom Look Like? • Provides opportunities for different performance modes both pint and multimodal. • Students are encouraged to share their varied perspectives in a supportive environment. • A balance of individual and collaborative activities. • Work centered around projects. • Evidence of a break down of traditional student teacher roles. • Evidence of student engagement where students experience “flow” states.

Do you think cyber bullying happens often at Fairmont State? • 5. What would your reaction be if one of your students used a curse word in a social network site?

Students as Experts • Keep your head up high and stay in charge! • Always remember to have everything you need! • Never give up, no matter how frustrating • it gets! • Stay calm when a student forgets something. • Remember to speak in a calm voice! • Never be shy to mess up. • Be random and mix it up a little bit. • Remember subjects are not just facts.

Pre-Service Teachers • I was nervous about doing the Magazine cover because I felt like my status was • at the will of these ten year olds, but I was happy to read the TONS of responses • I received. I was flattered actually. • I had no idea that there were such great websites available for teachers and ways to • incorporate technology into the classroom. • I learned that fifth graders are a lot smarter than I thought!
