Where the College is Now • George Brown College has Four main campuses (Casa Loma, St. James,Ryerson and Waterfront) and a number of satellite locations, and is constantly evolving to improve and grow.   12. Employment Packages • You should have received a new hire package when you were hired. The following should have been included. Note: if you did not receive some of this information, call the Human Resources Department at ext. 4446. Additional copies of the Support and Academic Collective Agreement con be obtained from the Council’s website:www.TheCouncil.on.ca. • Conditions of Employment • Conditions of employment are determined by your contract, or collective agreement (if full-time Faculty or Support), or by a memo (if part-time). • Employment Equity Survey • George Brown is committed to being an equal opportunity employer. Pay Information • Pay is directly deposited to your specified bank account bi-weekly. • Payment to non full-time staff is deferred by two weeks, to see the part-time pay schedule go to: https://insite/finance/default.asp • Payment to full-time staff is up to the day, to see the full-time pay schedule go to: https://insite/finance/default.asp • Note: if you have expenses that fall under the appropriate categories for payment by the College, an expense statement must be submitted to Payroll. You will be reimbursed on your next paycheque.   14. Pay Deductions • There are a number of deductions that are mandatory for full time staff - income tax, pension, E.I., CPP, union dues, etc.- but you may also elect to have other funds deducted. These elective deductions may include direct deposit to the Credit Union, additional health and insurance coverage, RRSP payments, and charity or computer purchases plan (see bookstore for details).   15. Benefits, Pension & Compensation • Once you have accepted a full-time position at GBC, you will be contacted to make an appointment with us. At that meeting, you will sign off on your contract and sign up for benefits. We will discuss the co-ordination of any existing benefits and you will be given benefit details and informed of any waiting periods that may be in effect. • Health insurance:Please note you must be registered with OHIP to be eligible for any extended health benefits.   16. Need Some Help? – Employee Assistance Program • A voluntary, confidential, counselling and information service for full-time GBC employees and their families. The College pays for these services. No identifying information is reported to the College. • The program is designed to help you with personal or work-related problems, pressures and stress before they lead to more serious difficulties. • For first time appointments andcounselling call:1-800-387-4765 This number is toll-free and can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. College Policies Continued • AODA, Accessibility Standards for Customer Service and the Accessibility Policy: These two policies aim to support an inclusive environment in the provision of goods, services or facilities to the College Community in accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. For further information on this policy, please go to: http://www.georgebrown.ca/AODA/ • Captioned Media & E-Text Policy: This policy aims to support an inclusive academic environment by incorporating universal design concepts that reduce or remove barriers for individuals with diverse learning abilities. All media resources used by faculty and staff will be purchased with either closed or open captioning while textbooks and other print materials must be available in electronic format to facilitate accessibility in multiple formats such as Braille, large print and digital audio. Mandatory Training In accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2005), Accessibility Standards for Customer Service Standard and the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation all employees, volunteers, contractors or others who provide goods, services or facilities on behalf of the college are obligated by law to complete the following training: • Accessibility Standards for Customer Service Training. You may access the training by going to this link: http://www.georgebrown.ca/AODA/Training/ . Select the appropriate employee group and begin the training. Upon completion you will be asked to fill in your name on a certificate form which will be sent directly to the AODA Coordinator and Staff Development indicating that you have completed the training. • If you are an educator as defined in the AODA, Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation, [Definition: educators: employees who are involved in course design, delivery and instruction], you must also complete the Accessibility Awareness Training for Educators located on PD Place, by going to this link: http://pdplace.georgebrown.ca . The training will be made available on you PD Place profile you and upon completion you will be asked to indicate that you have read and understood the training material. Completion of training is required by law and is now a condition of employment at the College. Diversity, Equity, and Human Rights Services • George Brown, the City College, is committed to fostering a climate where all human rights are respected and to creating an environment that welcomes and respects individuals, and values the contributions of all its members.   23. Freedom of Information • Staff and student information must be dealt with carefully. In general, all personal information is confidential. • Only the student has the right to see his or her marks.   26. When is the College Closed? • The College only closes when conditions make it too dangerous for students and staff to reach the College. Since we are located on TTC routes, we are generally closed on fewer occasions than colleges in outlying areas. • For information about whether the college is closed or classes are cancelled, call 416-415-5000 or toll-free 1-800-265-2002. WHMIS Training • Our College recognizes its obligation as an employer to ensure that the measures and procedures prescribed by the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and the regulations made under the OHSA are complied with. All Staff at the college are to be trained and for more details on WHMIS or training please contact OHS Department at ext 4799. • WHMIS is an acronym for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is a hazard communication system developed jointly by the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, as well as business and labour. • WHMIS is directed toward transmitting information from the supplier to the worker. Ergonomics • Ergonomics focuses on how the work environment affects workers. • Ergonomic hazards refer to workplace conditions that pose the risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system of the worker. Examples of musculoskeletal injuries include tennis elbow (an inflammation of a tendon in the elbow) and carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition affecting the hand and wrist). Ergonomic hazards include repetitive and forceful movements, vibration, temperature extremes, and awkward postures that arise from improper work methods and improperly designed workstations, tools, and equipment. • For more information on Ergonomics please contact OHS Department at ext 4799.   32. Fire Alarm – Code Red • Know the closest exit to your working area. Signs are posted inside all classrooms and offices to direct you to the closest exit. • If you have a student or colleague with a disability make sure you know how to assist this person to exit the building. Flashing alarms are also installed in key areas of the college to assist hearing impaired staff and students. • When the alarm sounds, immediately exit the building in an orderly manner and get away from the building, so that fire trucks can have unimpeded access to the building. • Fire Marshals (wearing red baseball caps) are responsible for making sure everyone has exited the building.   33. Student/Staff Illness • Yellow emergency phone boxes are located on all floors of each campus. These phones will connect you directly to the security desk. • In an extreme emergency, call 9-911 (which will connect you with the city emergency service). • Notify your supervisor if you will be absent from work. • First Aid Staff cannot provide a doctor’s note.   42. Booking Rooms, Equipment, Supplies and Materials • Check with your departmental assistant for supplies and materials. Classrooms often lack chalk, so it is wise to make sure you have a supply. • Most classrooms have an overhead projector and screen.   44. “Smart” Classrooms • There are many "smart" classrooms which have built-in video/data projection systems, sound systems where necessary, and an internet connection. They are part of the regular classroom pool at both Casa Loma and St. James and Waterfront campuses. • When scheduling information is submitted by the divisions before each term begins, a "smart" room may be requested if class activities require the use of specialized equipment.   45. Booking Meeting Rooms • Boardrooms can be booked for meetings at the various campuses. • All departments have boardrooms (varying seating capacity & technology). Textbooks • Check with your departmental assistant or contact the Bookstore at ext. 2665. • Choices of textbooks must be approved by your department Chair or Coordinator. • An e-text copy of the course textbook should be made available to any student who requires one. All e-texts should be ordered as early as possible. If one is not available it will require a few weeks to have one audio taped for accessibility purposes.   47. Photocopying and Printing • Photocopiers are located throughout each college campus. Access to the machines is by a departmental code and your department may have a particular machine assigned to it. Check with your department assistant for access. • Photocopiers are to be used for small runs of material only. George Brown is part of a consortium of community colleges that use the services of Grenville on Campus. Printing requests must be filled out on a printing request form, available from your departmental secretary or administrative assistant. Grenville on Campus • Grenville maintains a walk-in print shop at the St. James Campus located on the lower level beside the cafeteria that offers a variety of printing and duplication services. • They also handle special printing requests, such as binding, posters, shrink-wrapping, etc. • It is best to make your printing requests at least a week to ten days in advance of the date required.   49. Submitting Marks • Faculty enter marks directly into STU-View, which is part of BANNER. Check with your department office to determine which system is used. BANNER training is available to all staff. Please check with your department for more information. In some cases, marks are to be submitted via your Department office.
