  1. Section 25 Launch Campaign . . . Rick Pickering EO-1 Instruments Systems Manager

  2. Agenda • Transportation • Launch Site Processing • Overview • Flow • Facilities • Communications • Procedure Status • Support Equipment • Launch Vehicle Interfaces • Issues • Summary

  3. Transportation • Transportation Plan (SAI-PLAN-314) - 5/20/99 • Shipping Container • Custom Designed for EO-1; Consists of Dolly and Cover • Used for Movement from Swales to GSFC; Dolly Used for Intra-Facility Movement in Buildings 7/10/29 • Shock Isolation System • Desiccant, Humidity Indicator, Pressure Relief Breather Valves, Through Fitting for Purging • Spacecraft • Bagged w/ GN2 Purge in Climate-Controlled, Air-Ride Van • Swales Mechanical Personnel in Chase Vehicle • Planned Stops to Monitor Purge • Respond to Contingencies • Shock Environment Monitored

  4. Transportation (continued) • GSE • Shipped 3 Days Prior to S/C in Climate-Controlled, Air-Ride Van • Responsibilities • Swales • Planning • Loading of S/C into Shipping Container, and onto truck • Crating of loose equipment • GSFC/Transportation Branch • Arranging commercial transportation • Installation of shock/vibration monitoring system • Final preparation and loading of EGSE racks and crates • NASA/KSC/Vandenburg Launch Site (VLS) • Unloading support • Storage of shipping container, crates, etc. • Similar approach used for movement of S/C from Bldg. 836 to Bldg. 1610 • GSFC responsible for shipping flight battery and racks

  5. EO-1 Shipping Container

  6. Launch Site Processing - Overview • Flow Similar to Many Previous GSFC Missions • Launch Site Activities Plan (SAI-PLAN-337) • Major Difference: 1st Use of Boeing Dual Payload Attach Fitting (DPAF) • Satellite • Post-Ship Checkout in Bldg. 836 • Fueling & DPAF Integration in Bldg. 1610 or TBD Commercial Facility • Launch from SLC-2W; Co-manifested w/ SAC-C (Argentina) • GSE • Initially set up in 836 • Few items move to 1610 and SLC-2W • Personnel • Primary office space in 836 • Work at 1610/SLC-2W as necessary

  7. EO-1 Launch Site Flow

  8. Building 836 • Managed by NASA/KSC/VLS • Class 100K Clean Tent • Control Room for ASIST Work Stations and other EGSE • Office area for EO-1 personnel • Storage for shipping container, etc.

  9. Bldg. 836 Lab 1 Clean Tent

  10. Bldg. 836 Lab 1 GSE Area

  11. Building 1610 • Managed by NASA/KSC/VLS • Class 100K Clean Room • All SAC-C post-ship processing performed here • Primex to fuel both spacecraft from single set-up • DPAF and Vertical Shipping Container pre-positioned • Only necessary personnel will work at 1610; offices and most EGSE remains in 836 • NASA/KSC/VLS providing man-lift for S/C access once integrated w/ DPAF • Potential availability issue

  12. Space Launch Complex 2 West • Class 100K Clean Room on Levels 5 & 6 • Only necessary personnel will work at SLC-2W; offices and most EGSE remains in 836 • All access and activities will be coordinated w/ Boeing

  13. EO-1 Launch Site Communications • Comm Requirements Straightforward • Integrated Operational Requirements Document issued by Boeing; defines requirements to Western Range (WR) • Most Comm Links rely on existing, previously used capabilities. Exceptions: • New S-Band Antenna at SLC-2 (installation/testing complete) • X-Band Splitter at 836 (checked out; final installation after IMAGE launch) • New GPS Antennas at 836 and SLC-2 (checked out; final installation after IMAGE launch) • Umbilical Rack Reset in Remote Launch Control Center: Boeing provides interface for Swales control box; plan is to install/checkout after S/C arrival at VAFB • S-Band and S-Band links between 836 and SLC-2 must be shared by EO-1 and SAC-C; no unavoidable conflicts expected

  14. Planning/Procedure Status • Goal is to utilize I&T procedures to the maximum extent possible • Fueling Procedure has been trial-run by fueling contractor, Primex • Contingency Planning • Defueling • Launch Scrub • Missile System Pre-launch Safety Package (MSPSP) delivered to both 30th Space Wing and NASA/KSC/VLS Safety Offices

  15. GSE Status • EO-1 requires relatively little GSE • All EGSE remains in Bldg. 836, except: • Umbilical Rack: Will be moved to SLC-2W Electrical Equipment Building (EEB) while S/C being fueled • Battery Racks: Will be used in Bldg. 1610 and on pad (located on Level 3) • No GSE used by EO-1 at VAFB for first Time by EO-1, except: • Battery Cooling Cart: Being Provided by NASA/KSC (Used by GGS/Polar); GSFC unit too large for use on Mobile Service Tower (MST)

  16. Launch Vehicle Integration • Delta II/EO-1 Mission Specification: • To be issued by Boeing by end of Dec; no issues expected • Requirements verification needs to be completed by Boeing • Coupled Loads Analysis - completed; all loads within design limits • Dynamic Clearance Analysis - completed; significant margins • Schedules - Boeing’s Countdown Bar Charts in good shape for this stage of program

  17. Launch Vehicle Interfaces • Payload Attach Fitting (PAF) provided by Boeing • Fit check w/ flight PAF successfully completed • 100 lbs springs instead of standard 200 lbs springs needed due to EO-1 mass and CG off-set • T-0 Umbilical Harness • Flight harness mated during PAF fit check • Flight mate will be be done as part of DPAF integration • Dual Payload Attach Fitting (DPAF) • First flight • Qual program and pathfinder complete

  18. Launch Vehicle Interfaces (continued) • Environmental/Contamination • “Whiteroom”: Class 100K, 65-75oF, 35-65% R/H • Fairing Air: Class 10K, 55-60oF, 35-65% R/H • Spacecraft Access • MST Level 6 - Adjustable height; must be shared w/ SAC-C on limited occasions • Diving boards/platforms provided by Boeing • 2 24” Fairing Access Doors • GN2 Purge Line Installation (Fly-away purge) • Battery Cooling Duct Installation Removal • GSE • Battery racks on Level 3 • Battery cooling cart on Level 6 • Umbilical Rack in EEB

  19. Issues • Bldg. 1610 may NOT be available due to potential conflicts with IMAGE and NOAA-L • IMAGE may not be out of 1610 when SAC-C begins to arrive • NOAA-L needs 1610 3/1/00 for 5/9/00 Launch; may slip • Held initial discussions with potential commercial facility providers: Astrotech and SSI (SLC-6) • Astrotech accommodates existing plans essentially w/o change • SSI requires changes to both equipment and procedures (e.g., fueling equipment and proc, EGSE cable lengths?)
