When Did the Fur Trade Occur? • Stared in the late 1600’s • Due to European demand for beaver hats • Ended in the mid 1800’s • Due to the end of fashion craze
What Was the Fur Trade? • System of Bartering • Native hunters would trade with European Companies: • Natives – Beaver skins • Europeans – cloth, hatchets, guns, kettles, beads, needles, etc.
Who Was Involved? • Native fur traders • Beavers • French and British voyagers • Hudson’s Bay Company • North West Company
Where Did the Fur Trade Originate? • Began in Hudson Bay area • Spread across Canada
Why Did the Fur Trade Come to Exist? • From 1550 to 1850 • felt hats were fashionable in Europe • By late 1500’s beavers were extinct in Western Europe • Also close to extinction in Scandinavia and Russia • North America became new source for fashion trade
The Beaver • Young are called kits • Born with full fur, open eyes, and ability to swim • Herbivores • Eat bark, leaves, woody vines, grass, shrubs, pond plants, and lily pads • Store food underwater during winter • Live in family groups • In ponds, rivers, and small lakes with muddy bottoms • monogamous
