  2. ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION • Thefirst constitution for the government of the newly formed United States of America. • This was a loose alliance or agreement between the states.

  3. ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION • Wary of a strong federal government like Britain. • Verylittle power was given to the federal government. • Too much power was given to the states. • A failed experiment

  4. STRENGTHS • A war was successfully waged against the British and won under the Articles. • The Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution was successfully negotiated. • States had to recognize the laws of other states • Organized new territory with the land ordinances

LAND ORDINANCE OF 1785 A way to divide,sell and organize land A section in each township set aside land for public schools: “…morality and knowledge…necessary to good gov’t and happiness…, schools and…education shall forever be encouraged” NORTHWEST ORDINANCE OF 1787 Encouraged westward movement Prohibited slavery:” …neither slavery nor involuntary servitude…” (unless convicted of a crime) Runaway slaves had to be returned STRENGTHS

  6. WEAKNESSES • The thirteen states acted like independent countries. • Thefederal government had no money and no power to get it. • The federal government had no Bill of Rights to protect the rights of individuals.

STATE CONSTITUTIONS • Purpose of the gov’t is to protect natural rights. • A higher law that must be obeyed. • Social contract by the people to form a gov’t where the people are the source of power • Elected representatives • Right to vote restricted to white men who owned property (most states) • Legislative supremacy-got most of the states power (not governor, not courts, legislature)
