  1. MEASURING JOINT R.O.M.

  2. Background Info: • Range of Motion (R.O.M.): description of how much movement exists in a joint • What may inhibit range of motion? • Typical movement at joint? • Measuring Unit --- degrees

  3. Active vs. Passive • Active: movement created by muscular contractions around the joint. • Passive: movement and force created by external source pushing on body around joint. • Which is greater?

  4. Flexibility Training • Dynamic/Ballistic: use of momentum of body segments to extend joint position beyond R.O.M. • Static: slow stretch, maintained for several seconds. • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF): stretching procedures involving alternating contraction and relaxation of musculature. • Debate between these three still exist.

  5. Relative Reference Systems • All Joints @ 0except • Ankle @ 90 • Forearm varies Fundamental Standing Position Anatomical Standing Position

  6. Joint Position & Displacement Displacement: the difference between initial and final positions 90 140 140 0

  7. More Examples…. 0 40 90 0 90
