Healthy Relationships. Bellringer Activity. Stand in a circle at arm’s length apart. Toss a ball or small object across the circle from one to another, to establish a pattern. Repeat the pattern for 2-3 rounds. Now try calling out the name of the person to whom you’re tossing the ball.

  2. Bellringer Activity Stand in a circle at arm’s length apart. Toss a ball or small object across the circle from one to another, to establish a pattern. Repeat the pattern for 2-3 rounds. Now try calling out the name of the person to whom you’re tossing the ball. Think of a characteristic that you look for in a friend. Now repeat the pattern calling out that characteristic before tossing the ball. Try reversing the pattern or adding in extra balls.

Why are Teen Relationships important? • Developing relationships with • others your age is an important • part of forming your identity. • Dating provides friendship, • companionship, and support, • and allows you to explore characteristics you might want in a future partner or spouse. What does the term “dating” mean to you?

Finding the Right Person What type of characteristics make a good friend or dating partner? • is unselfish • treats others well • is tolerant and respectful • has morals and values similar to yours • is fun to be with • respects himself or herself You should also try to be the kind of person that you and others respect.

  5. Being the Right Person It takes 2 to make a good relationship!

Appropriate Dating Behavior • Dating in groups allows you to get to know each other without the pressure of being alone. • Respect your partner’s decisions and sexual limits. • Ask your partner about his/her thoughts, feelings, opinions. • Treat your partner in the way you want to be treated. Be on time, courteous, respectful. • Follow the rules your parents and your partner’s parents have for dating.

  7. Dating can be safe, fun and healthy but there are also some potential risks: • Extreme jealousy (Constant worry that you’re partner will cheat, lie, or break up) • Sexual coercion (pressuring for sex) • Digital harassment (constant texting, cyber-bullying, sexting) • Dating abuse (hurtful or controlling behavior) • Intense feelings of loss that • can be part of breaking up.

  8. All relationships change, how you handle that change is what matters!

Making it Through a Break up • It’s natural to have intense feelings during and after a break up. • Stay in touch with your friends and do things you enjoy. • If you feel extremely sad or depressed talk to a parent, counselor, or other trusted adult. • If your ex is having difficulty breaking • up, talk to a trusted adult.
