  2. Articles of Confederation • In 1776, each state had their own constitution. • November 15th, 1777 The Articles of Confederation were completed. • It was the 1st written constitution in our country • Effective after all 13 states ratified the document

  3. Author was John Dickinson • He was scared of a strong central government because of the experience with Great Britain • The Articles established a loose alliance of states rather than a strong central government

  4. The continental Congress became the law making body of the land. • Each state was given 1 vote in congress

  5. Strengths of the Articles • 1) Declare War • 2) Make army and navy • 3) Borrow $ • 4) Est. Postal System • 5) Conduct Business with Native Americans and other countries

  6. Weaknesses of the Articles • 1) Weaker than the states • 2) Can’t carry out laws • 3) No Courts • 4) Didn’t require states $ • 5) Congress cant collect $ • * Had no $ to carry out business
