  3. Design: The Spirit Bomb • Generator constructed from: • plexiglass • PVC • 4 block magnets • 400ft of copper wire • Frame constructed from: • particle board • L-brackets and screws

  4. Design • Propeller constructed from: • 8 curved plate tin blades • Blades connected to aluminum axel • Lube to reduce friction • Blades spin about a horizontal axel that spins the magnets directly. • Cost: $21

  5. Mechanical Aspects • Wind energy from the fan spins our propeller. • The spinning propeller turns aluminum rod. • Magnets attached to our rod are also spun. • Length and surface area of the blades adds to the torque on the rod

  6. Electrical Aspects • Magnets spin within a box that is wrapped in magnet wire. • Spinning magnets create constant changes in the magnetic field. • Changes in magnetic field causes voltage within the wire. • Because our circuit is closed, this voltage begins to flow creating an electrical current thus lighting our bulb. • This process is called Electromagnetic Induction.

Design Issues • Choosing the type of propeller to use -wind turbine, two liter bottles, two blade propeller, and finally the 8 bladed, sheet tine prop • Finding copper magnet wire • Properly stripping the wire • Mounting the generator box and assuring sturdiness • Re-attaching magnets to a new rod after the generator had been constructed

  8. Conclusions • Windmills are much so much better than roller coasters (at least the construction part) • Simplicity, in this case, was the key to being successful • This wouldn’t have been possible without contributions from each team member
