Mt. 7:21-27 • Two types of people: Those that do His will and Those who do their own will and credit them to Christ – Mt. 7:21-23 • Two types of builders: Wise and Foolish – Mt. 7:24, 26 • Two types of foundations: Rock and Sand – Mt. 7:24-27 • Jesus Christ is the solid rock foundation upon which our • faith must be built to be successful! • I Cor. 3:10-11: Paul (a wise master builder) laid the foundation of Christ, no other foundation will endure! • I Cor. 10:4: Jesus is the Spiritual Rock that nourished the Israelites and He is the source of salvation to saints as well! (Jn. 4:13-14; Heb. 5:9) • Building on the Rock (Jesus) will enable one to withstand the storms of life (Js. 1:2-4) Intro I Cor. 10:1-4 (Jn. 4:13-14; Heb. 5:9) 1. For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2. and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3. and all ate the same spiritual food; 4. and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.   3. Edward H. Mote (1797-1874): • “The Solid Rock” (1834) • Mote grew up in London as the son of godless innkeepers who forbade Bibles in their establishment. • He converted to Christianity at around age 16. • He became an accomplished cabinet-maker and ran his own shop, was a reporter, and later a Baptist minister till resigning in 1873 due to health. • One day he had the chorus to “The Solid Rock” run through his mind and he wrote down the first 4 stanzas. • After reciting them to a dying woman, he was asked for a copy so he went home and wrote 2 more stanzas and delivered the copy to the family. • It was published as a hymn in 1836 in Mote’s own hymn book, Hymns of Praise: A New Selection of Gospel Hymns, Combining All the Excellencies of Our Spiritual Poets, with Many Originals. Intro Christ is our Solid Rock and foundation for hope in eternity with God! The Solid Rock

  4. “My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.” Hope is for what is not yet seen & we eagerly wait for it! (Rom. 8:24-25) Jesus lived a perfectly righteous life and then shed His blood for our sins; our hope is built upon His sacrifice! Rom. 5:6-10 (Eph. 1:7) 6. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Christ’s Blood & Righteousness are the Foundation of Our Hope The Solid Rock

  5. “My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.” He is our hope of glory (Col. 1:27; Vss. 25-27) Col. 1:25-27 25. Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, 26. that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints, 27. to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Christ’s Blood & Righteousness are the Foundation of Our Hope Our hope in eternal life with God Almighty was paid for in the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ! The Solid Rock

  6. “When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil.” The Scriptures teach that all have sinned and need God’s grace (Rom. 3:23-24) It is the darkness of sin that veils His lovely face (II Cor. 4:3-4) • The only hope that we can have for salvation is grounded • on the grace of God as manifested in Christ (Eph. 2:8-9) • Heb. 13:8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Christ’s Unchanging Grace is the Anchor to Our Hope! Eph. 2:8-9 8. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9. not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. The Solid Rock

  7. “When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil.” Hope is pictured as an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast! (Heb. 6:17-20) Heb. 6:17-20 17. In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18. so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. 19. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20. where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Christ’s Unchanging Grace is the Anchor to Our Hope! Our hope rests in the unchanging grace of Jesus, Who is our anchor for the soul! The Solid Rock

  8. “His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.” • The oath refers to that by which God confirmed His • promise of our hope, which then serves as an anchor to • support us in the “whelming flood” (Heb. 6:17-20) • God has given saints two unchangeable things to place their hope in: His word and His oath in regards to His promises! (Rom. 15:4: God’s word gives hope!) • It is impossible to imagine anything more secure or certain! (Rom. 15:13: Hope in God’s promises is cause for joy!) Christ’s Oath & Covenant are the Surety of Our Hope Rom. 15:13 13. Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Solid Rock

  9. “His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.” We all face those times when it seems as if all around our soul gives way (Job 14:1) But if we put our trust in Christ, He has promised that He will be our hope and stay (Heb. 13:5-6, 8; I Pet. 1:22-25) Heb. 13:5-6 5. Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU," 6. so that we confidently say, "THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?" Christ’s Oath & Covenant are the Surety of Our Hope There is nothing more sure and steadfast than the hope we get from the word of God! The Solid Rock

  10. “When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in Him be found, Dressed in His righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the throne.” Someday, He shall come with trumpet sound (I Cor. 15:22-24; I Thess. 4:16-18) Our desire is to be found in Him (Phil. 3:9-11; II Pet. 3:10-12; Rom. 4:3; Tit. 3:5; Gal. 3:27) I Thess. 4:16-18 16. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. 18. Therefore comfort one another with these words. Jesus has gone to prepare a home and will come back for His saints (Jn. 14:1-6) Christ’s 2nd Coming is the Goal of Our Hope Our hope of Heaven is made sure by the Lord’s promise to return and take His saints home! Chorus: “On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand!” We must obey Him to be saved (Heb. 5:9), but our obedience is not the ground of our salvation, it is only the condition upon which we receive it The ground of our salvation is the grace of God demonstrated in the death of Christ (Rom. 5:6-10) Conclusion Everything about our hope should remind us that it is built on Christ, “The Solid Rock!” The Solid Rock
