Matthew 7:21-22 (NASB) 21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. 22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'

  5. Matthew 7:23 (NASB) "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.'

  8. The Two Types of Foundations for Living. • The Rock (Mat. 7:24-25).

  9. Matthew 7:24-25 (NASB) 24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock. 25 "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded upon the rock.

  10. John 12:48 (NASB) "He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.

  11. The foundation of Christ and His apostles (their word) is what “God’s house” or the true church is built upon! (Eph. 2:19-20)

  12. Ephesians 2:19-20 (NKJV) 19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone,

  13. “The Rock” also stands for the Lord in whom we believe and put our trust (1 Pet. 2:6). Is the Lord truly our Rock in whom we trust from day to day?

  14. Psalms 18:2 (NASB) The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

  15. 1 Corinthians 3:11 (NASB) For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

  16. “The Rock” is an Unshakeable foundation! (Luke 6:48)

  17. The Two Types of Foundations for Living. • The Rock (Mat. 7:24-25). • The Sand (Mat. 7:26-27).

  18. Matthew 7:25-27 (NASB) 26 "And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act upon them, will be like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand. 27 "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and burst against that house; and it fell, and great was its fall."

  19. Proverbs 12:1 (NKJV) Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.

  20. Most people build their lives on shifting, uncertain, and unstable sand. • Emotions (Prov. 14:12; Jer. 10:23)

  21. Proverbs 14:12 (NASB) There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

  22. Most people build their lives on shifting, uncertain, and unstable sand. • Emotions (Prov. 14:12; cf. Eph. 4:14) • Impulsivity / Impatience (Prov. 12:15)

  23. Proverbs 12:15 (NASB) The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel.

  24. Most people build their lives on shifting, uncertain, and unstable sand. • Emotions (Prov. 14:12; cf. Eph. 4:14) • Impulsivity / Impatience (Prov. 12:15) • External / superficial: (2 Cor. 4:16a; 2 Cor. 5:7b)

  25. 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NASB) for we walk by faith, not by sight —

  26. 5:7b) • Trust in Wealth & Possessions (Luke 12:19-21):

  27. Luke 12:19-21 (NASB) 19'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry."' 20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?' 21 "So is the man who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

  28. 5:7b) • Trust in Wealth & Possessions (Luke 12:19-21): • Worldly Thinking (Rom. 12:2)

  29. Romans 12:2 (NASB) And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

  30. 5:7b) • Trust in Wealth & Possessions (Luke 12:19-21): • Worldly Thinking (Rom. 12:2) • Selfishness / Self-centeredness (Phil. 2:4; cf. 2 Tim. 3:1-4)

  31. 2 Timothy 3:1-2a (NASB) 1 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of self...

  32. 5:7b) • Trust in Wealth & Possessions (Luke 12:19-21): • Worldly Thinking (Rom. 12:2) • Selfishness / Self-centeredness (Phil. 2:4; cf. 2 Tim. 3:1-4) • Religious Error (Eph. 4:14; cf. 1 Tim. 4:16)

  33. Ephesians 4:14 (NASB) As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;

  34. 1 Timothy 4:16 (NASB) Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things; for as you do this you will insure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.

  35. “SAND” With such a shaky foundation and misplaced trust, great will be the fall of that house!

  36. What’s Your “House” Built Upon? • Building “the house of life.” • Depending on how we build, will make all the difference to our success or failure in life. • Even if we somehow survive “the fire” what will happen to our family for example ? (cf. 1 Cor. 3:11-15)

  37. Both builders appear to build well (Mat. 7:24-27). • Both houses may seem the same; both may look attractive and substantial on the outside. • Yet on the inside, at the heart and foundation of the house, there are big differences!

  38. Matthew 23:27-28 (NASB) 27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. 28 "Even so you too outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  39. The foolish builder appears to have a stable house when he does not. • The wise builder not only appears stable, but also has a solid foundation.

  40. We all need a safe and stable “house” to live in. • Both builders desired a house (Mat. 7:24-27).

  41. Disappointment comes for the person who puts trust in a home that is unspiritual, where Christ is never a welcome guest! (Job 8:15; Prov. 3:33)

  42. Job 8:15 (NASB) He trusts in his house, but it does not stand; He holds fast to it, but it does not endure.

  43. Proverbs 3:33 (NASB) The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, but He blesses the dwelling of the righteous.

  44. Only a commitment to Christ and His word will our house successfully stand! (Prov 14:11)

  45. Proverbs 14:11 (NASB) The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish.

  46. Will Your “House” Stand or Fall?

  47. Proverbs 12:7 (NASB) The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous will stand.

  48. Everyone’s house or life will be tested by “the storms of life” (Mat 7:25, 27). • Rain = Trials (1 Pet. 1:6-7) • Floods = The World (Col 2:8; 2 Tim 3:12) • Winds = Satan’s attacks (1 Pet 5:8) • Depending on the foundation, our lives will either stand strong or collapse when challenges and tribulation come!

  49. The ultimate “storm” we must prepare for is the Judgment Day.

  50. Jeremiah 23:19 (NASB) Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone forth in wrath, even a whirling tempest; It will swirl down on the head of the wicked.
