  1. Chapter 6.1 Atoms, Elements and Compounds Notes.

  2. Atoms are the building blocks of all matter living and non-living. The Structure of an Atom

  3. The Nucleusis the center of an atom made of protons and neutrons. Protons are positively charged particles within the nucleus. Neutrons are neutral particles within the nucleus. Electrons are negatively charged particles that orbit around the nucleus. atom movie Parts of an Atom

  4. An Element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances Each element is given a one or two letter symbol. Common biological elements are: C = carbon, H= hydrogen, O = oxygen, N = nitrogen, S = sulfer Elements

  5. Elements are organized into a periodic table. Horizontal rows = periods Vertical columns = groups elements video Elements

  6. Periodic Table movie

  7. Compound is a substance formed when two or more elements combine Covalent bond is when the electrons are shared equally Molecule is a compound in which the atoms are held together by covalent bonds Bonds

  8. An Ion is formed when an atom gains or loses an electron and now carries an electric charge An Ionic bond is an electrical attraction between two oppositely charged atoms or groups of atoms called ions. compound movie Ions

  9. When molecules come close together, the attractive forces between the positive and negative regions of the molecules hold them together. Van Der Waals Forces

  10. Van Der Waals Forces
