  2. Personal Information • James was born on June 3, 1726 in Edinburgh, Scotland • He was one of five children • Attended the University of Edinburgh • By 17 he was apprenticed to a lawyer • He lived with his 3 sisters for his whole life • He never married • He died on March 26, 1797

  3. Scientific Contribution • James Hutton recorded his ideas and innovations in an unpublished treatise on “The Elements of Agriculture”. • James also developed an interest in geology and meteorology and in 1753 he had become fond of studying the Earth’s surface. • James theoretical ideas began to come together in 1760 and in 1764 he went on a geological tour of northern Scotland

  4. Changing our Understanding • James Hutton is known as the father of geology because he concluded that the Earth’s surface was constantly changing, contradicting the popular view that Earth’s surface stayed the same • Hutton also gave the first correct explanation of why and how rain formed
