  1. Chapter 7 The Stillness is Broken

  2. Chi and Sa had settled down for the night. After doing their daily chores and eating their supper, the two women sat and talked over the campfire. When they ran out of things to say, the women sat silently. Suddenly, out of the stillness, the women heard their names called.

  3. They knew it was not their imagination. The man’s voice became loud, and he identified himself. The women were worried and unsure if they could trust the guide. They were afraid that The People might kill them but they knew they had to answer.

  4. Dagoo had been standing patiently. The young hunters doubted the women were there. Out of the darkness they heard Sa’ answer. Dagoo smiled. They were alive! Immediately they headed toward the old women.

  5. As the men approached, Sa and Chi stood with dangerous-looking spears. “We mean you no harm” he assured them. The women asked why they had come. Dagoo explained the chief thought they were still alive and sent them to look. The women were skeptical.

  6. Dagoo said he would return to the chief and report that they were here. The two women wondered what would happen next. Dagoo assured them that the chief would protect them. The women invited the men inside their warm tent.

  7. Inside the tent they sat down while the women gave them fish. They looked around and they could see that the women looked in much better shape than The People. Sa stared at the men as they ate their food. She could tell they had not been eating well. Chi noticed this too.

  8. Dagoo explained that The People were in bad shape. He told the women that when the chief hears that they are well, he will invite them back to the group. He said that they were sorry for what was done to them. The women were skeptical and still did not trust The People.

  9. Dagoo told the women that he would protect the women for as long as he lives. After seeing the women’s new found strength he vowed to never believe himself old and weak. The younger men spoke up and vowed to protect the women. The two women talked quietly deciding if they could trust them.

  10. Chi worried that The People would take all of their food once they discovered their caches. Sa explained that The People needed their help. They had become strong and if The People left them again, they knew they could survive. Sa reminded Chi of her grandson. Chi knew her friend was right.

  11. The women told the story of how they survived. The told the men of their caches and shared their concern that The People might take it. They decided they would only see Dagoo and the chief and The People could stay at the old camp. After they said everything they needed to say, the women began to relax. They were no longer alone.
