Classroom Redesign ProjectRoom 103 Leonhard Team Awesome Adam Crampton Kyle Gilbert Chanel Outley Kaylyn Rossi 3/02/2009
Problem Statement After visiting 103 Leonhard on multiple occasions, it was apparent that our most important goal was to satisfy the customer; in this case the students and faculty for our classroom. To do this we needed to develop the comfort and accessibility throughout the classroom and improve the over-all atmosphere of the students’ learning environment.
Generated Concepts • Chairs-Students complained that the connection between the desks and chairs was both uncomfortable and frustrating. We replaced these chairs with standard classroom chairs, adding cushion to the seat. • Row up middle aisle- To lessen the congested aisles, we took out two seats from each row and created a middle aisle so students can get to their seats faster.
Generated Concepts Continued • Raised Desks- In addition to the stadium seating already present, we raised the desk height for taller students. • Handicap accessibility- We removed two seats in the front of the room and placed a handicap-accessible desk in its place.
Generated Concepts Continued • Chalkboard-Often dirty and hard to erase, the chalkboard was a problem but instead of removing it we split it in half and installed a whiteboard for convenience. • Whiteboard-A whiteboard is easier to erase and see for most students, but in case there is a glare we left the chalkboard available. • Curtains-Students complained of the glare on the overhead projector so we installed automatic curtains that close from a switch on the wall.
Pugh Chart Continued • Based on the other iterations of the Pugh Chart, it was concluded that the board that ranked the highest, whiteboard-chalkboard split, would be used to replace the existing chalk board.
Bill of Materials • 56 Cushioned classroom chairs • 6 Standard classroom desks • Remote-operated Curtains • Chalkboard/whiteboard split
Cost of Renovation • Replacing Chalk boards with White Boards: approximately $ 400.00 • Replacing chairs with padded chairs: approximately $14,000.00 • Electronically controlled curtains: approximately $300.00 • Total: approximately $14,700.00
Closing Remarks • Overall, the new design fits the needs of both professors and students • Renovation can be completed for a reasonable cost • Renovation can be completed in a reasonable amount of time
