  1. Ancient Greece

  2. I. Geography • Smashed pieces (like a smashed cookie) some pieces floated around some piece jut out as peninsulas = body of land surrounded on 3 sides by water • Most of Greece is mountainous and bad for farming • Only 1/5 is useable, forces them to be traders and sailors. • Islands and land islands separate Greece - like separate countries • each felt own customs and beliefs were best • would fight for their beliefs - even though they were alike (like siblings)

  3. II. Minoans • Civilization during the Bronze Age from 3000-1100 BC • Lived on Crete with access to the Mediterranean Sea and Aegean Sea

  4. Very little known about Minoans other than: • Broad sea trade • Very successful based on remains • They were militarily weak as they were easily beaten up and declined • focused on trade,

  5. III. Mycenaeans • Would take over most of the Minoan empire • Traded but also did some empire building • Mixed cultures and spoke an early form of Greek

  6. IV. Trojan War • Great Greek Myth - Doesn’t really happen

  7. A. Epic = a long story-telling poem • Iliad and Odyssey. Stories of gods, goddesses, the war, and the aftermath. credited to Homer • Story of Helen “Face that launched a thousand ships” and the Greeks that attack Troy to get her back. • Most agree it did not happen like Homer said, if at all • Scholars believe if Troy really existed it was destroyed by fire in the 1200s B.C. (maybe by the Greeks)
