BUILDING EFFICIENT NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURES: OUR EXPERIENCE AJAYI, O. B. UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA
Outline The presentation is divided into 3 folds: • The Past • The Present • The Future
The Past • Agitation to join other Universities in having institutional mail server • Use of Dial-up connection from a PC • Introduced Linux Server after initial problems with virus • Having to rely on local service providers • Messages are downloaded once a day and five days a week
The Present With the aspiration to have a state of the art network infrastructures, the institution embarked on the followings: • VSAT installations with 128kbps duplex • Campus-wide area network linked with optic fibre • Acquisition of High-end SUN Servers • Installation of Blackboard for e-learning management system, Portal, etc.
The Present – cont. Issues not taken into consideration: • Proper IT policy for the effective running of the system • Learning from experience of others • Management applications were not installed • Personnel were not trained. They rely on their personal efforts • Security and maintenance agreements • Structured network setup
The Present – cont. Problems faced: • Virus infection • Low bandwidth • Unreliable network and power supply • No Bandwidth Management System • Low throughput • Illegal users • IP conflicts etc.
The Present – cont. Some of the solutions proffered: • Introduction of structured LAN using routers • The use of enterprise anti-virus program • Planning to restrict users to max. of 14kbps through bandwidth manager • Introducing firewall and DNS where users are to be authenticated • The use of dedicated bandwidth • Use of DHCP for IP addressing
The Future • Emphasizing on capacity building • Introducing effective network monitoring tool • Improve on the power supply • Engage in Collaborative efforts • Operating 24 hours 7 days service • Increasing the bandwidth
Challenges • Building and improving on the network infrastructures • Sustaining online services to students • Introducing open source solutions • Educate clients by organizing seminars and workshops • Re-orientate the policy makers • Improving power supply, etc.
