  1. Bellwork1. Leave your BW blank, but put it out so I can stamp while you work…..2. On the back of yesterday’s computer lab paper (lined paper if you were absent) set up the HW like the board (2 mins)

  2. Announcements Critter due TOMORROW!!! Science Fair Fill out TERM for three possible questions- due MONDAY What does TERM stand for?

  3. Science Fair Question Guidelines (add applicable info to front of lab/HW paper) • Has to be an EXPERIMENT where you collect your OWN DATA (not observation or research only) • Using people as test subjects/surveys? Need 100+ total • Building something? Must be an IMPROVEMENT on an existing thing OR something new entirely (a new kind of solar cell, etc.) • Sports? Must build a contraption to kick/throw ball etc. so that it is done the exact same every time

  4. Organisms & Energy Flow(notes on linedpaper)

  5. Autotrophs “Self” “food” Autotroph = organism that makes food for itself (producer)

  6. Heterotrophs “Different” “food” Heterotroph = organism that eats other organisms (consumers) I must be a heterotroph, since I can’t synthesize these!

  7. Try this! (5 mins) At your lab table: Work as a group to quickly sort the cards & use arrows to show which direction energy is flowing Example:

  8. 2 Big Categories of Organisms Make a T-chart Autotrophs/ Heterotrophs/ Producers Consumers

  9. There are two types of autotrophs/producers

  10. Autotrophs • 1. Phototroph : use energy from sun to make food (photosynthesis)

  11. Autotrophs • 2. Chemotrophs : use energy from chemicals to make food • Ex- Bacteria in deep sea vents

  12. There are many types of heterotrophs Tell neighbor as many types as you can Hint: A cow is one type

  13. Heterotrophs • Herbivores: eat ONLYplants • Omnivores: eat BOTH plants & animals • Carnivores : eat ONLY meat

  14. Heterotrophs • 4. Scavengers: feed on dead organisms • Ex. – Vultures, Shrimp, Mealworms!

  15. Heterotrophs • 5. Decomposers : Absorb dead materials/waste & break them down into fertilizers for plants • Ex. – bacteria, mushrooms

  16. Try this! (Part 2) Add organism terms to the cards at your lab table Example: Omnivore

  17. Closure On BW (blank from today)- Draw a simple food web that includes your CRITTER Label each organism with vocab- herbivore, phototroph, etc. (must have at least one producer & 3 different kinds of consumers) When finished, update your unit divider (see board)
