Civics and Government • GLCE C4.3 Conflict and Cooperation Between and Among Nations • Explain the various ways that nations interact both positively and negatively. • 6 – C4.3.3 Give examples of how countries work together for mutual benefits through international organizations (e.g. North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Organization of American States (OAS), United Nations (UN)).

  4. Lesson Objective • After you careful review the Power Point you will be able to identify why the United Nation was created, how many countries and what languages are spoken. Then you will correctly answer the three quiz questions don’t forget to review any wrong answers as needed.

  5. Cant we Just get along  • The United Nations is an international organization with 193 country members. These countries have joined together to strive for peace and security in the world. • Its first meetings were in San Francisco and delegates came there from all over the world at the end of World War II to begin this exciting new project. There were only 51 countries in the beginning. • The UNheadquarters are now in New York City, they meet and discuss world developments. Retune to quiz

  6. United Nations is not a government it is a peace mission. This means that member countries are forbidden to interfere or meddle with the local affairs of another country. The UN cannot impose taxes on the different member countries, but each country pays its share of the UN expenses. Each country still has its own sovereignty. Retune to quiz

The UN has 4 main purposes: • To keep peace throughout the world. • To develop friendly relations between different countries. • To help different countries work together to improve the lives of the very poor people in the world, to help with hunger, disease and illiteracy and to promote respect for others rights and freedoms. • To be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve the above goals.

  9. So many members • Since the UN was founded, many countries have been accepted as members, and as there are so many different countries and members, six official languages have been adopted: • Arabic • Chinese • English • French • Russian • Spanish. Retune to quiz
