  4. Theory • Stated that the amount of power a country has to wield in the world (colonies, territories, outposts, trading routes…etc) was greatly affected by and directly related to the size and ability of its navy, and the location of its naval outposts

  5. Model • The United States expansion throughout the world in the middle to late 19th century is a great example of the influence Mahan’s books. America had previously an isolationist county, with little influence in the world. To increase its power, the government permitted the buildup of its navy, so more soldiers and supplies could travel faster to farther parts of the world. Because of the increase, the navy needed to expand its bases, and add more outposts for where it traveled frequently. They put them on or near islands that they captured in strategic locations. This new power exerted in the Pacific circle let the US have more influence in politics and trading, opening up new Asia-America relationships.
