  2. Childhood • Michael Phelps was born on June 30th, 1985 in Maryland.

  3. Childhood • Michael Phelps is the youngest of three children. • He has two sisters Whitney and Hilary • His mother and father are divorced and he grew up with his mom.

  4. Childhood • At age seven Phelps was still scared to go underwater. • He joined the North Baltimore Aquatic Club at age seven also. • However he later mastered his backstroke.

  5. Childhood • Phelps began training with Bob Bowman in 1996. • He made the US national team in 1999. • In 2000 he qualified for U.S Olympics at age 15. • He competed in the summer Olympics. • He is the youngest male swimmer in 68 years.

  6. Adulthood • On December 9th, 2008 Phelps published his second book "No Limits : Will to Succeed". • However Phelps was arrested for drinking and driving under the influence and was sentenced to 18 months probation and a fine of $250 and high school speakings to students about drinking.

  7. Adulthood • Michael Phelps started his own foundation in 2008 called the "Michael Phelps Foundation" to create a healthier lifestyle for children and grow the sport of swimming.

  8. Achievements • Michael Phelps is the youngest world record holder in swimming. • In 2001 he won the first international title. • Throughout Phelps swimming career he won a total of 22 medals : 18 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze.

  9. Achievements • Phelps set the world record for the most medals of any Olympian. • He was the first swimmer to set 5 world records.

  10. Achievements • Michael broke the world record in the 400 meter. • He came in first and received a gold medal. • In 2008 Phelps was awarded gold medals in all events.

  11. Adulthood • Phelps retired from his swimming career after the 2012 Olympics.
