  4. The Phrase (page 1 in your phrase/clause book) • A phrase is a group of related words that is used as a single part of speech and that does not contain both a verb and its subject. It forms part of a sentence.

  5. Adjective Phrase (Page 3 of Phrase/clause book) A prepositional phrase used as an adjective is called an adjective phrase. Modifies a noun or pronoun. *Generally follow the word or words they modify.* Answers: What kind? Which one? How many? How much? A prepositional phrase used as an adverb is called an adverb phrase. Modifies a verb, adjective, or an adverb. *May appear at various places in a sentence. * Answers: When? How often? Where? How long? How? To what extent? Why?

  6. Examples of Adverb and Adjective phrases (page 4 in your phrase/clause book) Adjective Phrase-The store with the neon sign is open. We bought a cd by Janet Jackson. Here’s a gift for you from Uncle Steve. A majority of the mammals in the world sleep during the day. Adverb Phrase- We got our new puppy at the animal shelter. A puppy is always redy for a game. He barks loudly for a puppy. *Can appear in various places* At dusk, we went inside to eat dinner. We went inside at dusk to eat dinner. We went inside to eat dinner at dusk.
