Conditions favorable for corrosion exist when pipe-to-soil potential difference is more positive than –850 m V Conditions for coating degrading exist when pipe-to-soil potential difference is more negative than –1300 mV

  3. USER NEEDS Provision of the on-line information on the current and expected geomagnetic conditions benefits the planning and performance of corrosion protection surveys. On-line modelling of PSP at the pipeline test posts during corrosion protection surveys helps in interpretation of field PSP data On-line information on the time and location of PSP out of safe range contributes to the proper evaluation of pipeline performance and expected lifetime.

  5. EVALUATION OF USER SATISFACTION Evaluation of the SDA performance has been done by personnel of CORRENG corrosion consulting company. On-line modeling of the pipe-to-soil potential difference and comparison with the real pipeline data shows that “…the results are encouraging”, see the poster presentation. Evaluation has also been done during pipeline survey on Trans-Canada pipeline by the staff of Geomagnetic Laboratory and Carleton University, see the poster presentation. On-line service applications were presented at the Northern Area Eastern Conference of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), Halifax, September 2005. The are no data on direct financial benefit of this free service.

  6. BUSINESS PLAN PROSPECTIVE FOR IMPROVEMENTS SWS Pipelines on-line service is permanent In future : Increase data sampling rate Increase the level of complexity for pipeline model EXPAND TO OTHER GEOGRAPHIC AREAS

  7. Answers to the “last moment” questions: • 1. Is the service better than the system previously adopted by the user, does it save them time and if so, how much.. ? • It does not save time, but might save money (instead if immediate digging make more surveys of problematic area) • 2.In the slide sustainability we would like to see: • - how much effort is needed to run the service- none, it’s automatic • how much it would cost-about 5000$/year for IDL licence maintenance • - how much income it may generate from potential customer(s) (in the case of • a centralised service)-in this case we need to find customer other than Canadian • and/or to what extent it can be funded from other sources (e.g., corporate, governmental, agencies)- • it is already 100% funded from other source • 3.In the slide prospective we also need some more detail and are very interested in: • - whether it is beneficial to run the service as part of a global service or • would it be better to maintain it as stand-alone- uncertain • - whether some service improvements could significantly modify the • conclusions on sustainability-it is already permanent • - whether some improvement on the upstream data provision segment could • significantly modify the conclusions on sustainability-it is already permanent
