  3. These are the test grades from Test III Considerably lower from Test I (since Test II was something separate) I hope you have refocused over break for the coming weeks The final will be in this format, and cumulative

  4. So where are we going Mr. Geier? I’ll tell you…We will study the origins of Greece, look at its mythology, and get ready for its confrontation with Persia

  5. Let’s start with something easy A visual of what is going to happen

  6. After 1500 BC • Minoan civilization fell apart • The Mycenaeans (from the Greek mainland) began to rise • The Mycenaean states were small kingdoms that fought • The would conquer what was left of the Minoans

  7. The Mycenaeans • Powerful kings • Aggressive diplomacy • Intense competition • Built great palaces with strong walls to defend their holdings • Money was raised by taxing trade and farming

  8. Mycenaean Inspiration Their lust for conquest and glory led to several legends about them

  12. The Geography of Greece And how it will shape everything we are about to talk about

  13. Geographic Effects • Smaller landmass compared to other locations (Louisiana) • Dozens of small islands • Mountainous • Surrounded by water • “We are like frogs on a pond”

  14. The Impact of Geography • 80% of Greece is mountainous • The Pindus Mountains • Mount Olympus is the largest mountain in this range • These mountains not only isolate the Greeks from foreigners but also themselves • The isolation probably caused early Greeks to collaborate together more than other societies • Positives • Negatives

  15. The Impact of Geography • Seas • Greece is surrounded by different bodies of water • Ionian Sea to the west • Aegean Sea to the east • Mediterranean Sea to the South • And the Black Sea in the North • Bays and inlets perfect for harbors • Soon became seafaring people
