  2. Greeks used their minds and their hands to create beautiful things • Their art is one of Greece’s greatest contributions to society

  3. On the Athenian acropolis, the Parthenon temple stands in ruins today • It was built for the Athena – a goddess • Athenians built it after the Persian Wars

  4. The Parthenon was built in 400 B.C. and considered to be the most perfect building ever made • It has 46 columns or pillar, is 237 feet long and 110 feet wide

  5. Each column curves a little so they appear straight from a distance

  6. Why Did the Statue of Athena Shine? • 39 foot high statue stood inside the Parthenon • Phidias (sculptor) carved her face from ivory and a gold helmet

  7. The rising sun makes her shine • Greek sculptors also created beautiful figures of the human body • They showed the human body as perfect, no flaws

  8. What are the 2 Kinds of Greek Plays? • Greeks invented plays in outdoor theaters • The chorus stood on stage and told what was happening in the play

  9. Only men could act in Greek plays

  10. Playwriters wrote tragedies and comedies

  11. In a tragedy, the gods defeat the hero • The hero is always smart and has courage, and too much pride

  12. When watching a tragedy, the Greeks felt both happy (because the hero was strong and courageous) and sad (because the hero was defeated)

  13. Comedies made fun of important people and ideas • Aristophanes wrote many comedies, including The Cloud (made fun of Socrates, a philosopher)

  14. What do Philosophers Want to Prove? • Philosopher means a lover of wisdom • Philosophers ask questions to lead them to wisdom and the truth

  15. 3 of the greatest Greek Philosophers were: Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle

  16. Why Get Rid of Socrates? • Socrates forced people to examine what they believed • He always said “Know thyself” (know why and what they believe)

  17. He questioned everything, even the Athenian democracy • Athenians did not trust him, they thought asking questions was unpatriotic

  18. 399 B.C. Athenians spoke out against Socrates when he was 70 years old • They said his teachings hurt people • The jury voted against him

  19. They said he must kill himself by poison • His refused to escape and obeyed the law • He was put to death

  20. Plato’s Republic • Plato was a pupil of Socrates • Wrote a book called TheRepublic about a made up society with 3 classes: workers, soldiers, philosophers

  21. This society was not a democracy • Only philosophers could rule

  22. What did Aristotle Write About? • Aristotle was Plato’s student • He wrote about: astronomy, biology, ethics, logic, physics, and politics

  23. In Politics, he wrote about different kinds of government • He said no government was perfect
