  1. Seminar assignment • Handed out at course start • Group work/individual assessment • Research based aspects, requires independent work • Obtain appropriate information- lectures, discussions, web, articles ..… • Time scheduled to prepare answer • Presentation of assignment in seminar format:Groups 3, 4, 5 + 6 Friday 19th NovemberGroups 1 + 2 Thursday 25th November • Grading = pass / fail

  2. Seminar assignment Why? • Training for the exam • Attain “core” knowledge • Apply knowledge from previous courses • Sort out misunderstandings

  3. Seminar assignment 1. How could lipid accumulation in the liver be due to defects in adipose tissue? Cusi K. Curr Diab Rep (2010) 10: 306-315

  4. Seminar assignment Association between liver fat accumulation and a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) located in the promoter of gene X in a putative binding site for peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPARs). 2. Describe the molecular mechanism of action of PPARs

  5. Seminar assignment 3. Calculate the frequency of each of the alleles

  6. Seminar assignment Your task is to design three complementary research studies in order to explore the medical importance of the SNP Study 1. A confirmative human study of your preliminary findings that is population based (~5000 individuals). Study 2. An individually based human study consisting of ~50 individuals that could test whether drugs could influence the degree of hepatosteatosis depending on the SNP in gene X Study 3. Design and describe an in vitro study that will investigate the putative underlying molecular mechanisms using commercially available cell lines
