Gunnar Niblaeus M.Sc, BA Working in the Forest industry and related industries since 1973 Specialized in IT & business consulting Represents Tieto in the project ”Indisputable Key” Work package leader ”Dissemination & Exploitation” Who am I? 2009-09-23 EFORWOOD - Shape your sustainability tools
The challenge! Proper raw material for specific final products - a major challenge for the forestry-wood production! 25 million m3 of wood raw material in Europe is going to waste! Page : 3 2009-09-23 EFORWOOD - Shape your sustainability tools
The general problem Knowledge about wood properties and their impact on final products is insufficient for achieving a significantly improved yield. Some practical examples: • Production of low moisture content wood mostly gives a high percentage of rejects due to warp • During production of high strength wood beams the amount of beams that cannot be approved can be numerous • To achieve boards having a sufficient amount of heart wood big amounts of boards normally have to be downgraded Page : 4 2009-09-23 EFORWOOD - Shape your sustainability tools
Knowledge about wood properties and their impact on quality and the final end-use of wood products helps to choose the most suitable log for a specific product already in the forest. This contributes to significantly reduced amount of waste due to improper wood characteristics. Postulate & conclusion Automatic traceability systems making information available about individual objects at different stages along the forestry-wood supply chain are required. Objectives: Develop necessary methodology and advanced ICT solutions for improving the use of wood and optimizing forest production Demonstrate the concept and its benefits 12,7 M€ financed to 50 % by EU (FP6) From October 2006 to March 2010 28 partners, more than 150 participants R&D Institutes, universities System integrators (ICT) Industrial users Industrial manufacturers Indisputable Key Page : 6 2009-09-23 EFORWOOD - Shape your sustainability tools
Drivers for Improvement Yield: • How to maximize the value yield of an increasingly expensive raw material? Process: • How to minimize downgrading? • Continuous improvement of production efficiency • Continuous improvement of logistics and transports Innovation: • How to use raw material characteristics for innovative product development? Collaboration: • Increased flexibility in the value chain, manage changes • Exchange of information Environment: • Environmental performance as competitive edge • Guarantee Certificate of origin • How to stop illegal cutting?
