  1. LBNE - PMT production testing workshopTuesday, February 23, 2010. Madison, WIXinhua Bai, SDSMT Robert McTaggart, SDSUPeggy Norris, Sanford Lab & BHSU

  2. We are interested in: • Join testing method & facility development • Join PMT unit production & testing • Explore the possibility of mass PMT unit production & testing & storage in SD – ex. SDSMT, Lead, etc. • Lead regional outreach programs during the lifetime of LBNE

  3. 1. SDSMT – 50 Miles from DUSEL

  4. 2. SDSMT: Research Centers • Additive Manufacturing Laboratory (AML) • Advanced Materials Process and Joining Lab (AMP) • Center for BioEnergy Research and Development –  (CBERD)  • NSF I/UCRCCenter for Bioprocessing Research and Development (CBRD) • Center for Friction Stir Processing (CFSP) • NSF I/UCRCComposites and Polymer Engineering Laboratory (CAPE) • Computational Mechanics Laboratory (CML) • Engineering and Mining Experiment Station (EMES) • Institute of Atmospheric Sciences (IAS) • NASA EPSCoRRepair, Refurbish, and Return to Service Applied Research Center (R3S) • 2010 Center South Dakota Space Grant Consortium - NASA • Deep Underground Science & Engineering Center – New!

  5. 3. Need more temporal space? – one example – Black Hills Business Development Center • Office on SDSMT campus • The Black Hills Business Development Center is committed to offering quality, affordable space to attract start-ups and businesses with growth potential. • Within the Center a full range of business services is provided free or at a low cost through sharing. • The facility offers office, lab and light manufacturing space for lease. • http://www.blackhillsbiz.com/ • Lab space for lease at $9.10/year/sqft, including everything, half the market price. • Total 40,000 sqft, 10,000 sqft by administration office, technical support, conference rooms, etc. • 4,000 sqft available on Feb 19, 5yr maximum lease

  6. 4. Optical lab at SDSMT - We do some PMT test with UC Davis for LUX. -The water shield (d=8m, h=6m) Dark room A dark box – not finished yet

  7. 5. Optical lab at SDSMT – Still under development Some electronics • Analysis room: • Ice/Water Cherenkov GEANT4 simulations (Just started, IceTop simulation model) • Data analysis – root based

  8. 6. Photonics Laboratory at SDSU • Dark Room • Two 5 ft X 10 ft Optical Tables • 50 picometer Optical Spectrum Analyzer • Optical Time Domain Reflectometer • Fusion Splicer • Optical Power Meters • Lasers and other optical components

  9. 7. METLAB at SDSUhttp://sd-metlab.org/contact.php • Destructive Testing: • Static/dynamic material testing systems • Hardness testers • Microscopy systems • Non-Destructive Testing: • 3-d Computed Tomography • High speed video • Borescope • Metal alloy analyzer • Ultrasonic and phased array • Acoustic emissions • Electromagnetic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant testing

  10. 8. Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering at SDSU • Photovoltaics • Micro-Nano Electronics and Materials • Satellite Image Processing • Photonics Laboratory • LIDAR Remote Sensing • Electromechanical Systems • Power Systems • Measurements and Instrumentation Lab • Material Evaluation and Testing Lab (METLAB) • Thermo-Fluids Lab • Dynamic Systems Lab • Energy Analysis and Energy Efficiency Lab • Biofuels/Biomass Energy Conversion • Wind Application Center

  11. 9. New PhD program in physics • It will add: • 3 new faculty members in SDSMT • 2 new faculty members in USD • 1 new faculty members in SDSU • Most (hopefully all) will be in DUSEL physics • Passed external review • Support by SD governor • Was approved by SD BOR • Budget in legislature’s office

  12. Questions? SD version of “ice fishing”

  13. ! More local people, including students, are interested! More local resources could be made available toward DUSEL programsHow to make these happen? - More involvement is needed/supported

  14. B.S. in Engineering Physics at SDSU • 40 hours of Physics, 33 hours of Engineering • “Intro to NE” is Physics 435 • Emphases in ME and EE have access to equipment in both departments • Senior Design Project required • PMT studies for LBNE could support ABET accreditation

  15. Innovation Campushttp://www1.sdstate.edu/InnovationCampus/index.cfm • 125 acres next to SDSU in Brookings • More than one million square feet of office, lab, and light manufacturing. • Mission Statement:  To create and build a first-class Research Park that encourages University, Business, Industry and Government Researchers, Scientists and Entrepreneurs, to collaborate and succeed in creating wealth and economic development opportunities for the State of South Dakota. Innovation Center
