Requirements • PC (Not Mac) with Windows NT or later • 128 MB RAM or more • 100 MB Free Hard Disk • Write access to installation drive • USB Port (if using flash drive) • Connection to Internet Analyzing Poverty Workshop June 23-27, 2008
Installation Note • PDQ-Explore is designed to run as a client on a PC that has Internet access to our PDQ server in Ann Arbor. • By default it installs in: C:\ProgramFiles\PDQ • NPC Computing lab machines do not allow write access to the C: drive. • Thus, PDQ-Explore has been installed on Drive H: (user IFS file space) and on Drive E: (external USB flash drive). Starting PDQ-Explore • Open My Computer and the H: Drive • Open the PDQ Folder • Double-Click on explore.exe • Or: Start, Run, h:\pdq\explore.exe • If using the flash drive, insert the flash drive in the USB port and proceed as above using Drive E: rather than Drive H:. • Note: The USB Drive letter is machine dependent Analyzing Poverty Workshop June 23-27, 2008
Getting Started • Confirm server: pdq.psc.isr.umich.edu • No subscriber name/password is required • Enter/Enter/Enter until “Open” window • Double-Click on “npc” workspace • Expand “ipacs_all” data set • Expand “housing” or “person” • Browse through variable lists Analyzing Poverty Workshop June 23-27, 2008
Set Up Query • Select a data set (ipacs_all). • Right click or click on the “Query” tab. • Click on “Setup New Expert Query.” • Setup window opens. • Fill in the blanks (see the following slides and related handouts). • Click on the “Results” tab. Analyzing Poverty Workshop June 23-27, 2008

PDQ-Explore Gotchas • You need to know what you can ignore. • Focus on tabulations and summary stats. • Large tables can be hard to interpret. • You need to understand the options: • Percentages • Totals • Sorting • Saving/Exporting/Printing Setups and Results Analyzing Poverty Workshop June 23-27, 2008
Installing the PDQ-Explore Client • Download PDQ-Explore from: • www.pdq.com/products/download • Install in default C:\Program Files\PDQ Folder. • OR • Copy PDQ folder on the flash drive to C:\Program Files on desktop/laptop computer; • Create a desktop shortcut to the explore.exe file in the PDQ folder. Updating Files • Files to Update from Blog to the PDQ Folder: • ipacs_all.pdqCodebook • ipacs_all.pdqCustomItems • ipcps_all.pdqCodebook • ipcps_all.pdqCustomItems (Forthcoming) • Zipped npcx.pdqWorkspace folder • The zipped folder should be unzipped to the PDQ Folder.
