  2. Background • January 1991 the president of Mogadishu is overthrown. • Group that overthrew the president broke up into two clans. • One led by Ali Mahdi Muhammad. • One by Mohamed FarrahAidid. • The groups began to wage war upon each other. • The UN & US began Operation Provide Relief.

  3. Leading up to the battle • Aidid began to turn his troops against the UN. • He thought that they were trying to get rid of him. • August 8, 1993 Aidid’s militia detonate a bomb; killing 4 US soldiers. • August 22 President Clinton gives the okay for Task Force Ranger to be deployed in Somalia.

  4. The mission (Supposed to take 30 Minutes) • Delta Force operators would lay fire on the building believed to be Aidid’s safe house. • Then the Rangers would fast rope in, surrounding the building and take their prisoners. • The main objective was to capture leaders of the HabarGidir clan. • Main target was Mohamed FarrahAidid. • Omar Salad Elmi (Adid’s Foreign minister) • Mohamed Hassan Awale (his Political advisor)

  5. What happened (highlights) • The assault by Delta Force began on time, but due to militia and civilians in the streets the humvees had to find alternate routes. • Then When the Rangers were fast roping in PFC Todd Blackburn fell 70ft. • He was taken back to the base by 3 humvees. • 4:20 The first of two Blackhawks is shot down by an RPG.

  6. What happened Continued • Another helicopter then dropped troops to give the survivors support. • This helicopter is also hit with an RPG, though it does not crash. • Super 6-4 is the second Helicopter to go down. • Two sniper are then voluntarily dropped around the second crash to provide support. • Strafing runs by AH-6J Little Birds keep the Somali forces from overpowering the survivors through the night.

  7. In the end (October 4th) • The rescue convoy arrives at 1:55 am • Not enough room for everyone, some have to run along the convoy. • This is know as the Mogadishu Mile. • 18 Americans are dead, 73 are injured, and 1 was taken prisoner. • Michael Durant was the prisoner, he was released after 11 days.
