Social=Sharing Library media specialists can use social media to acquire, SHARE, and produce information. Students can use social media to acquire, SHARE, and produce information. Key word=SHARING
What is social media? • Various internet-based tools that people can use to connect and share useful information
Clarification • What this presentation is NOT: • A step by step guide to setting up a Twitter account, Second Life profile, or Delicious account. • What this presentation IS: • An introduction and overview of social media, and its implications for professional and student use.
For Library Media Specialists: We can use social media to remain on the edge. We can social media to get connected. We can use social media to contribute our own knowledge, and provide help for others. All of these are qualities of a Personal Learning Network. (PLN)
What is a Personal Learning Network? Not a new concept! Where you get your knowledge BC version of PLN: teachers within your school, public librarian, professors at local LS (local scale) AC version of PLN: social bookmarking, Twitter, list-servs, wikispace communities, blogs, etc. (global scale)
Burning question #1: How can I use social media to create a PLN? Use these new tools to learn new things that will help you do your job better! Use these new tools to share what you already know with other professionals in need of that knowledge! Use these tools to produce new, useful information for other teacher librarians!
Burning question #2: What good is this to me? Lack of PD funding for eminent future, yet there is still need for professional growth Using cutting edge technology, without fees Learning the newest, best, and most useful information, and pass that along to students Connecting with students, in dipping into their world Try something new
Burning question #3: Is it much trouble? Expect a learning curve, but maintain learning as your priority Commit, and try one type of social media at a time. Choose your connections wisely! Devote any amount of time.

Google search produces quantity, social media searches produce quality Real-time results of news, events, trending topics Benefit from information favorably reviewed, liked, respected, considered useful, and shared by other library media professionals Database searches still relevant!

Delicious bookmarking: global network TeacherTube: national network of like-minded professionals Blogs: Using Google Reader to stream all the blogs I follow about teaching, technology, and library media instruction
Burning Question #5: How Do I Get Started? Twitter.com Delicious.com Find a few good blogs: create a Google account, and start using Google Reader to collect new posts! Remember to make learning a priority, and once you grow in confidence, begin to contribute to the great pot of knowledge!
Safe and Responsible Use Twitter: Complete your bio so that other teachers will know you are legit. Go private to protect yourself from being “followed” by undesirables. Blogs: No matter who recommends a blog, check it out yourself before subscribing to its feed. Time management! Personal/professional
Burning Question #6: Why/How Should I Use Social Media With Students? • Students=leaders of techno revolution • 0 learning curve for most of them • Use social media to engage • Twitter: • Succinct Writing (140 characters or less) • World History (#iranelection) • Unhindered connection to authors, illustrators (Laurie Halse Anderson, Alan Gratz, Mo Willems) • Searching hashtags (# + your topic=a real-time search of all posts on that topic)
Burning Question #6: Why/How Should I Use Social Media With Students? • Delicious (or Diigo): • Have students SEARCH for sites relevant to their topic (another user will only bookmark a site if it is useful) • Have students CREATE lists of sites they have found: • By topic or subject • For others to benefit from • As a bibliography or pathfinder project (they can add notes into each site’s bookmark description)
Burning Question #6: Why/How Should I Use Social Media With Students? • Blogger • Create a library blog and invite students to interact with you on the blog. • Encourage students to post reviews of library books they have read. • Use the blog as a place to hold photography, poetry, or creative writing contests.
